Convention Previews

These previews catalog games expected to be sold or displayed at the Nuremberg and Spiel game conventions, Germany's two largest game conventions. Spiel – German for "play" or "game" – is the world's largest game fair, drawing 150,000 people each October to the town of Essen, while Nuremberg hosts a tremendously large toy fair each February during which many game publishers announce games they'll release in the coming months.

These previews take hundreds of hours to research, assemble and write. (The Spiel 09 preview, for example, would be more than 400 pages long if printed!) If you appreciate the work that's gone into these previews and want to ensure that they continue in the future, donate to Boardgame News to keep this editor off the street and at the keyboard.

A list of all convention previews available on BGN:

PLAY: The Game Festival

scheduled for March 13 and 14 at ‘Modenafiere’ exhibition centre,
promoted by Club TreEmme in association with La Tana dei Goblin

Already in its second year, PLAY is currently the biggest games and entertainment convention of its kind in Italy, due to offer to passionate gamers the chance of fully immersing themselves into a great gaming experience, thanks to a rich schedule of events, tournaments and demos.
PLAY also aims to reach a wider audience: newcomers, beginners, kids and families alike, giving them a taste of the intriguing world of gaming, letting them be driven by their own curiosity.

It will all be there: ranging from tabletop roleplaying games, boardgames, collectible cardgames, live action roleplaying games, miniature games, not to mention videogames; and you will find even more: modelling showcases, introduction of new products and focused conferences, the ubiquitous tournaments and a very comprehensive gaming space including a whole host of titles form great classics to the latest products. A flooding river of fun ready to flow over Modena and its exhibition centre in the course of two full days, thanks to the dedication of Club TreEmme and the contribution of many gamers associations from all over Italy.

Convention Preview: Spiel 2007 – Publishers A-M

By W. Eric Martin
Translations by Patrick Korner and WEM

To give you an idea of the awesome breadth of the BGN Spiel 2008 preview, last year’s Spiel preview is posted here for all to see. Because of its immense size, the preview is split into two parts with this half including the publishers beginning with letters A-M. (Publishers N-Z are available elsewhere.)

Due to the hundreds of hours needed to create each preview – which includes exclusive designer interviews and first impressions of games yet to be released – access to the Spiel 2008 preview is limited to BGN members only. Support Boardgame News and get an encyclopedic look at what your gaming future holds at the same time by becoming a BGN member. The cost is $25, and if this coverage saves you from buying just one stinker, you’ve made your money back. (More likely, of course, you’ll make a shopping list that will have you eating rice and beans for a month to afford all the cool titles coming out, but let’s not go there.)

Convention Preview: Nuremberg 2007

By W. Eric Martin
Translations by Patrick Korner, Jasen Robillard, and WEM

The 58th International Toy Fair Nuremberg took place February 1-6, 2007 in Nuremberg, Germany. One of the two major game conventions in Germany—the other being Spiel in Essen in October—Nuremberg is a trade fair open only to those in the toy and game industry, as opposed to Essen which is open to the public.

This preview contains information on games that are expected to be announced at the fair. Note that at Nuremberg, games that are announced often aren't released until sometime after the fair, as opposed to Essen once again, where the games are typically released at the fair. Note also that this information has been assembled from many sources, often in languages other than English, so inaccuracies may have crept into the write-ups due to the editor's unfortunate monolingualism. As we receive additional information, we'll update this preview to keep you informed about the games you can expect to see over the next several months.

Note: Some non-German publishers such as Fantasy Flight Games, Mayfair Games and Rio Grande Games are included only for reference. These companies are unlikely to present games at the fair itself.

Convention Preview: Essen 2006 - Publishers A-M

Translations by Patrick Korner

Editor's Note: Because of its size, we have split the Essen Preview into two parts. This is the first part that includes the publishers beginning with letters A-M. To see the second part of this preview, check out the Convention Preview: Essen 2006 - Publishers N-Z. Also note that because of the split, some of the internal links in the preview will no longer work.

The Essen game fair in October is one of the two major game conventions in Germany, the other being the Nuremberg International Toy Fair in February. The Nuremberg fair is strictly a trade fair which is only open to people in the game business - the Essen fair is open to the public. Quite a few new games are expected to be introduced at Essen, which is taking place from October 19th to 22nd, 2006. This is a preview of the games that are expected to be released at the fair (or shortly before or after the fair, you never know with game companies).

Included in this report are a number of games that are to be released in the summer, between Nuremberg and Essen. We are including these games as they may also be featured at the Essen game fair. We will denote these games with a sun icon.

Note that this information is cobbled together from many sources, some in foreign languages, so be forewarned - some inaccuracies may have crept in. As we receive further information, this article will be updated.

Also note that some non-German publishers such as 999 Games and Café Games are included for reference only - these companies may not be at the fair itself.
