Misadventures in Gaming
By Dan Bosley
A gamer's misadventures while playing games with his non-gaming friends. Bosley's misadventures come in two series: Classic Misadventures, originally posted in 2003 on the Terminal City Gamers website and reprinted on BGN in 2006, and New Misadventures, posted in 2005 and 2006.
About Dan Bosley:
Dan Bosley owns and runs his own business, Screenguild Signs, and works far more than he should. Dan has been hosting the Terminal City Gamers at Screenguild every Monday night for the last several years. It's an ideal situation, as Dan frequently has an opportunity to mix business with pleasure; he keeps the large-format digital printer working away and earning money, while he plays games.
When Dan had more time on his hands, he wrote a lot of session reports for the Terminal City Gamers. Eventually the session reports died out, but Dan still had the writing bug to some extent. After one unusual gaming evening, Dan was inspired to write what he called a Misadventure in Gaming—and it received an amazing response from people, so Dan wrote a few more. After a writing hiatus when life got in the way, the Misadventures returned, and now Dan writes new ones on an irregular basis.
When not working or playing games, Dan performs as a professional actor in Murder Mystery Evenings, plays piano, watches old movies, and goes out with his wife, Diane, to whom he's been married for 25 years.
Dan currently resides in Aldergrove, a suburb of Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.

The four of us - Ted, Alice, Diane and little old me - start getting set up to play our second game of Metro.
“Say, Dan, Ted says. “You doing anything next Saturday afternoon?
“Unless I’m working, no, not that I know of, I respond.
“Well, then, says Ted. “Would you be interested in going to a tractor-pull?
I look at Ted. Blankly.

The four of us sit down at Ted and Alice’s dining room table. As the Metro board and the pieces get placed onto the table, Alice says, “Oh yes, I do remember this game. It was fun last time. Did you win last time, though, Dan? I don’t remember.
“I don’t remember, either. Ted says I did, I tell her.
“Oh yessiree, you did, confirms Ted. “I do recall that, yes indeedy, I most certainly do, do, do, yes indeedy.

It’s somehow threatening to them if they have to both listen to and absorb rules to a new game. They much prefer playing games with which they are already familiar. In their opinions, new games are hard and bad and often hurt the brain. Old games they already know are easy and good and don’t hurt the brain. Or something like that.

A few weeks ago, Rick, Jeff, Corwin and I were invited down to Seattle to meet and play some games all day with some Seattle gamers. It was a great opportunity, and one we all looked forward to increasingly as it got closer to the big day.

The rest of us concur.

Lance glances at his pants. He looks up at us. “I really don’t want to do this, he says.
“LANCE, admonishes Penelope rather loudly. I feel like saluting her, but I am afraid to do so in case she sees me. Who knows what she might do?
Lance looks down. He passes his arm down across his body. His hand passes in front of his crotch. It only seems to stop for a split second, if that, but suddenly there is a card in his hand.
“Holy one-syllable-word-for-excrement! Bob exclaims.

Apparently, judging from the various e-mails I received, some of you weren’t all together pleased with Misadventures # 12. Despite that chapter’s obvious truthfulness, a few readers somehow came to the unlikely conclusion that the events related therein were fictional. Others of you felt that #12 didn’t properly bring the David & Goliath & Lance saga to its proper conclusion and clamored for closure. A few of you thought that maybe I should take up writing restaurant menus instead of Misadventures.

The order of players around the table is Carol, Bob, Lance, Diane, and me. It’s Diane’s lead. She leads a Green 7.
“Ha! says Lance. “A green 7. Ha!
I play a green 6. Carol plays a green 3. Bob plays a green 10.
It’s Lance’s turn. He doesn’t play anything. He is staring at the table.

Bob and Carol and Ted and Alice love trick-taking games. So, having learned my lesson the hard way with the non-trick-taking TransAmerica, I decide that the next time I have an opportunity to introduce a new game to them, it will be a trick-taking game. But a trick-taking game with a twist or two. The one I choose is David & Goliath, the 1998 card game by Reinhard Staupe.
Trick-taking card games are the type of games that Bob and Carol and Ted and Alice have been playing for many years - it’s a game-mechanic that they are VERY comfortable with. So learning a new trick-taking game should be easy for them - it’s a game solidly within their “game-comfort zone. None of this weird German little wooden stick stuff.
Now as it turns out, Ted and Alice can’t make it this particular evening to Bob and Carol’s place. So it’s just the 4 of us, Bob and Carol and Diane and yours truly embarking on the great David & Goliath adventure.

The drink that Ellen has thrown in my face is now dripping down my chin and onto my shirt. Rye and Seven, I think. Ellen is standing right there in front of me, with her eyes wide open and glaring at me. She is looking rather kind of scary. The now-empty glass is clenched tightly within one of her hands.
“Whoa! I exclaim. “You silly person! I tell Ellen. (Note: language has been slightly modified to preserve the Misadventures’ keen sense of decorum. Feel free to guess what I really said.)
Ellen’s eyes are about ready to pop out of her head. The veins in her neck are threatening to turn her into a green female Hulk.

But just as fast as he drops the ball, Bill quickly does a sleight-of-hand move with the same hand that dropped it, and he catches the foosball before it hits the table. I try kicking his hand with my mid-fielders, but to no avail.
“Say, he says. “I have an idea. Why don’t we put some money down on this game? Bill smiles at me.
I look at Bill. I look down at the table to make sure it hasn’t magically transformed into a pool table. Nope. It’s still a foosball table.

My wife, Diane, works at an elementary school as a teacher’s assistant. And twice a year, the staff of the school get together for a staff party at one of the teacher’s houses. And the spouses (or significant others, as the case may be), get invited too.
I’ve been to lots of these staff parties over the years. There’s always lots of food (it always seems to be a Greek food theme - I don’t really know why, but it just is. “Hey, let’s have a school staff party. What kind of food should we bring? How about Greek? Greek? Didn’t we have Greek last time? We did Greek last time. Yes, we did, and it was good, so let’s do it again. O.K., Greek it is this time, too.). And the conversation at these get-togethers always tends to be about school and students and other work-related activities.
And meanwhile, all the non-teacher husbands just smile and nod and stand around uncomfortably (hmmm, he looks familiar, I think I met him last time...) and finally out of desperation start talking about sports and cars and other sweaty, manly topics.....
So that’s what we always do for the first hour or so.
And at every other staff party I’ve been to, that’s also what we do for the next 3 or 4 hours as well. And then we all go home until 6 months later, when we all get together and do the exact same thing all over again.
But this last time, a couple of different things happened, both gaming-related......

Ted removes the 2 arrows from his pineapple. Then he begins to toss the pineapple up and down into the air, catching it each time and then tossing it up again. Each time he catches it, he gives it a little squeeze, as if trying to see if any pineapple juice will squirt out. None does.
Bob is drinking his beer. “So are we going to play or what? Now what happens?
I suggest, “Why don’t we start over? We got off to a bad start. Ted, you must not have caught the part of the rules of Barbarossa where you want your sculpture to be ambiguous, not perfect.
Alice says, “If we’re going to start over, and I’m going first, I want to have a turn this time. Last time I didn’t get a turn my whole turn.

So. We’re all finished dinner. Everyone is full. Everyone has had a drink or two. We have retired to the living room for conversation. There is a hubbub of talking going on, mostly about jobs and kids and hockey and food and movies and what the neighbors did last week and all sorts of other fluffy stuff.
Ted and Alice are still snipping at each other occasionally, but mostly they are ignoring each other and talking to the rest of us.
A half hour has now gone by since dinner. I am ready to bring out the game. I await a momentary lull in the conversation. With Bob and Carol and Ted and Alice, you just don’t bring out a game and thrust it upon them unawares without advance warning. You have to get them psyched up for it first.
“I’ve got a game you guys might like, I venture during a brief conversational pause.

Before we go back in time a couple of months to Bob and Carol and Ted and Alice - the Barbarossa Adventure, I first have to tell you what happened last Friday night.
A few nights earlier, Carol had called and invited Diane and I over to their place for dinner on Friday night. This is Carol of TransAmerica Medford fame, and Bob of Little Black Sticks in Places They Shouldn’t Go fame.
Besides the invite, Carol told Diane “and tell Dan to bring a game.
Well.
I didn’t know quite what to make of that, given the recent TransAmerica fiasco (or at least what I thought was a fiasco) with Bob and Carol and Ted and Alice. I thought it had been a total gaming disaster, and they would never want to play anything else except their favorite card game, Oh Hell, again.
But despite that, here I was actually being REQUESTED to BRING a game. By non-gamers. The same non-gamers who had played that ever-so-painful, slow-motion game of TransAmerica only a few short weeks ago.
Was it possible that somewhere deep within their non-gaming hearts, a little “Urge to Game had been planted, and now it was crying out for nurturing? THEY had asked me to bring a game along. They WANTED to play a game after dinner. They wanted to PLAY A GAME! My goodness, I was excited! I was encouraged! I sang, I danced, I laughed, I beat my chest, I burped.

(Yes, I know, this was originally going to be More Fun With Bob and Carol and Ted and Alice and Barbarossa, but I wrote this instead. B & C & T & A will be back next week.....)
Gamers and non-gamers are different. Their brains are wired differently. A gamer likes to get a new game and open it up and read over the rules (several times) and punch out the pieces and generally try to anticipate and get a feel for what the game will be like when it actually gets played.
A non-gamer, on the other hand, would rather sit and watch a 2-hour Infomercial about the latest armpit hair removal gadget.

Finally, I manage to finish explaining how to play the game. The explanation, what with all the interruptions, has taken 10 minutes. Yes. Ten Minutes. Ten minutes to explain how to play TransAmerica. I inwardly shake my head.
Now I didn’t name my non-gamer friends last time. But I will this time, to make it a bit more clear who’s saying and doing what.. The names have been changed to protect the innocent, however. We have Bob and Carol, and Ted and Alice. And we have my wife, Diane (whose name has not been changed). And me. Dan. Whose name has also not been changed.
And just in case you’re wondering if I’m making this stuff up, I’m not. Oh sure, I may have taken a little literary license with the exact words they said, but the gist of it is pretty darn accurate. And I’m also NOT making up the stuff that you’re about to read. I wish I was making it up, though.....

I enjoy winning as much as the next person, but it’s the game-playing experience itself that is the real draw - I don’t have to win a game to enjoy it. Just getting together with friends to play some games is just something I really like to do.
Which is why I’m very thankful I’m in a gaming group! I get to play many, many games, both new and old, with a bunch of great people, on a regular basis. And may I emphasize, with a bunch of great people who also WANT to play games! It’s simply very rewarding, and I look forward to each session eagerly.
And because I enjoy that experience so much, sometimes I try to share my passion. I try to play games with non-gamers...... I should know better.....

Dave leaves, and I take the banner in hand and go downstairs. Donna is in the computer layout and design room.

“Remember that banner on Friday, the Now Leasing one with the phone number??
“Yes, what about it?? she inquires.

Throughout the entire weekend, I am champing at the bit for Monday morning to arrive. The Name the News Leader radio contest is not played during the weekend, so I have to bide my time all though Saturday and Sunday.
I have this dread feeling all weekend long that more and more people are learning that the answer to the contest is “Bob Rich?, and that any advantage I may have had at the beginning of the contest is dwindling away to next to nothing. I am anxious for Monday morning to arrive so I can once again get back into it and win this contest. For once, I want the weekend to speed through quickly. I want Monday morning to be here now.

I hear a busy signal. I hang up, and hit the speed dial button again. Another busy signal. I try a third time. Still busy.
This is not right. This is not fair. I know the winning answer. The phone line should not be busy when I know the winning answer. I should be able to get through.
I hit the speed dial button a fourth time. With the same result. A fifth time. And busy again.
How annoying. But how long do I try? I know logically that someone else has surely got through by now. But logic goes out the window when it comes to me winning this radio contest.

So there I am standing in line at the fast food restaurant. In my wisdom, I have decided that the car drive-thru line-up outside is far too long, and that I will be served faster if I park my car and come inside and order in person.
It’s very busy inside. There are four line-ups of people at the counter.
Line-ups #2 and #4 each have four people in them. Line-up #1 has six people and Line-up #3 has five people. So Line-ups #2 and #4 would seem to be the two best choices. But it would be a mistake to get into either of those two lines. I know from previous experience that whichever line-up I choose, it will automatically go into a time-drag-warp and become the slowest line. Therefore, I must not choose either of those two shortest lines. Picking one of the shortest lines will surely backfire on me, because if I do, it will indeed become the slowest line.
So I decide to fool fate. I choose Line #3, the one with five people. Much less of a target than either of the 4-player lines. So maybe fate won’t pick on me if I’m in line #3. Fate can pick on somebody else this time.

I half-heartedly continue to work. But my real concentration is focused on the radio. Finally, Frosty’s radio show is over, and the next talk show host comes on. It’s about time.
I am listening very carefully, and YES! he gives out the phone number. I scribble it down on a piece of paper and leave it right beside the phone. I don’t want to take a chance with forgetting what the number is at the crucial moment.
The phone rings. I answer it.

People sometimes wonder why I have so much grey hair. This is why.
Two Thursdays ago, as I’m driving into work, listening to the radio, the news comes on. Now usually, I tend to listen to the radio news with only half-attention, but every once in a while, a news event or a name catches my interest and I pay extra attention to it.
This particular Thursday morning happens to be one of those occasions. Way back when, when I was a young whippersnapper, and much wiser than I am now, I attended the University of British Columbia. One of the people I met in those distant, foggy days was a fellow by the name of Bob Rich. He became a good friend during my university days, and in fact, was one of the ushers at my wedding a few years later.

Bob turns and simultaneously tries to get out of his chair and grab Ken at the same time. He is partially successful - he prevents Ken from actually falling onto the table face-first smack into the Ticket to Ride game. Bob’s arm around Ken stops him from falling all the way to the table.
But in his off-balance fight with gravity, Ken’s hand has also lashed out in an effort to support himself and get his balance. His hand hits the game board, jarring it into sudden movement across the table. The board moves across the table a good foot, and just about all of the trains derail and find new homes across the continent or on the floor.
