Edwin Wong - Malaysia
This section contains the columns of Edwin Wong, who will be reporting from Malaysia.
About Edwin Wong:
Edwin Wong leads Malaysia's crusade to promote designer games in the South East Asia region, writing weekly for "Wanna Play?" in The New Straits Times, and contributing regularly to "Cards & Boards" in The Star, two of the country's leading English dailies.
His early years was shaped by the many Waddington games his sister brought home (bless her!); went to school occasionally while still in his role-playing character; battled his way through university using tactics he honed playing Avalon Hill wargames; partied away his bachelorhood with Trivia & Pictionary; settled down spending many blissful hours shopping on eBay (she for fashion; he for out-of-print games); and now raise their son together on collectible cards, euro board games and miniatures.
Although he is credited with bringing euro games to Malaysia, promoting it throughout the region with milestone events like GAMECON-1, and even doing pro-bono game design for projects of national interest (he designed "Hottest Race In The World", the official game/promotional tool of the Malaysian Grand Prix Circuit; and "Pride of The Nation", the official game/promotional tool of the Malaysian A1 Grand Prix team), Edwin runs the country's leading lifestyle financial institution "in his real life"...
Edwin currently resides in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

EDWIN WONG: My 2007 Spiel: PART 2 - More games I tried.
Continuing where I left off, I only managed another few games… but that’s because my priority at Spiel does seem to be meeting people, which I only get the opportunity to do so once a year (or less, if they skip Essen for whatever reason). Games? I can always play them anytime!
EDWIN WONG: My 2007 Spiel: PART 2 - The games I tried.
After 3 years, I still can’t find enough time to play more games at Spiel!
This year, despite keeping most of my meetings to the weekends (when the crowds are largest), I still only managed to try a handful of new games during the quieter Thursday-Friday period! I must be doing something wrong!
Reflecting back on those days, I think its because I spent too much time chatting away with familiar faces and new friends… not a bad thing really! In fact, my Spiel is becoming more of a time to catch up with old friends, make new ones, and of course, try new games - in that order! After all, the games will be there to play for a long time after; but friends, you only get to meet once a year (or less, if they miss Essen for whatever reason).
EDWIN WONG: My 2007 Spiel: PART 1 - The five days of Spiel.
While everybody was busy working on their Spiel/Essen articles, I was sleeping and adjusting to the time difference, having only arrived back in Kuala Lumpur last night.
Well, I’m wide awake now, so here is my 2007 Spiel Highlights.
Stay tuned over the next couple of days as I will be writing specifically on the growing Asian presence in Spiel, and featuring exhibitors and their latest releases.
Edwin Wong: My 2007 Essen Plan!
Well, it’s that time of the year again!
Like most repeat visitors, this year’s plan is really a combination of:
Do more of what I did right last year + Avoid what I did wrong last year + Try some new things I’ve read about = Great time! (Well, hopefully!)
Edwin Wong :: THINK 07-04 :: Top 5 Games… Guaranteed To Be Chick Magnets!
(THINK is a weekly column published by The New Straits Times on Saturdays)
Forget the notion that you could meet the girl of your dreams with corny lines and a can of beer. Wake up from your dream where she magically appears as you eat your ice-cream cone. Believe that you cannot possibly judge a book by its cover, so stay far away from speed dating.
Edwin Wong :: THINK 07-03 :: Top 5 Games… Your Gambling Grandma Would Love!
In “Tales of a Gambling Grandma” (New York Times Notable Book of the Year), Dayal Kaur Khalsa writes about her feisty, Russian-born grandma who came to America and supported her family by playing poker.
Edwin Wong :: Think 07-02 :: Top 5 Games For People With Shaky Hands!
Do your hands shake uncontrollably? Well, before you start worrying if you have Parkinson’s disease, you should know that its quite normal for our hands to shake very, very slightly all the time while we are awake, due to tiny muscle fibers in our hands and arms constantly contracting and relaxing at random!
Edwin Wong: 1st Half Gaming Review - “This Side of Earth”
July always seems a good time to review what has happened from January to June.
Edwin Wong ::Think 07-01:: Top 5 Games For People Who Hate Board Games.
You will probably be hard pressed to find someone who dislikes the latest mobile phone, 50-inch High Definition television or Louis Vuitton bag (other than the price of course!) - but board games???
Edwin Wong ::Think:: New Weekly Column on Designer Games
After an 8-month absence, Malaysian gamers finally get their weekly column on designer games again!
Edwin Wong: A Trip To Essen - Not Just To Play Games!
As we were attempting to round up Malaysian gamers to visit Spiel’06 this year, many lamented they they just couldn’t justify the cost of the trip via-a-vis the savings they would get from buying games at the fair, despite the very low prices (compared to import prices due to custom duties when these games come into the country).
I’m certain, many gamers from other parts of Asia, where interest in eurogames is growing rapidly, also shared the same concerns
Well, let me share with you, why you should NOT look at a visit to Essen as merely “playing games for 4 days”, but rather a GREAT German vacation for under RM4,000 (USD1,100)…
Edwin Wong: 2006 Euro Game Retreat
28 award winning euro games + buffet lunch, dinner, breakfast & tea breaks with snacks + the cool mountain air of the Awana Golf & Country Club + a great bunch of social/casual gamers = TONS OF FUN!

MALAYSIA
----------------
Media support was more than anyone could ask for! Weekly columns in both the major English dailies (New Straits Times & The Star), and extensive TV, radio and press/magazine coverage of GAMECON-1 resulted in many Malaysians now being aware of designer games.
1st year sales exceeded RM100,000 (from a non-existent market), with more than 50% of sales done online [http://homepage.mac.com/imagine_newszine], and retail stores carrying these games growing from zero to 10, with presence in all the major shopping centers in the capital city. Almost 90% of sales were from customers in the city capital, while others came from Ipoh, Penang and East Malaysia.
Edwin Wong: Final Run-Up To GAMECON-1 Malaysia!
This week, enthusiastic volunteers from no less than 4 countries, are making their final preparations for this weekend’s GAMECON-1 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia!
As Tom Vasel (Korea) puts the final touches to his paper, “Using Board Games in Education”, Andreas Wein & Colin Lim (Singapore) are holding their final briefing tonight at Settlers Cafe for their 12-gamer strong group. Meanwhile, Dale Walton (Thailand) is shortlisting 5 Mensa Select nominees/winners from his Pin series to be showcased under the Mensa Select Challenge, as the rest of us in Malaysia try to live up to the waves being created by the official website (www.gamecon1.com)…
Edwin Wong: Greetings from Malaysia!
Thanks Rick for the opportunity to be a part of this massive initiative to bring gaming news, and connect gamers, from all over the world!
For a start, here’s a quick snapshot of the scene in the Far East…
