A New Fairy Tale from What’s Your Game
Italian publisher What’s Your Game? is presenting a new version of Satoshi Nakamura’s Fairy Tale at Spiel 08. Fairy Tale, a card game in which players draft cards one at a time before playing them in order to collect certain cards and attack opponents, has had perhaps more versions that any other five-year-old game, with the original game from Yuhodo, a slightly different version from Z-Man Games/WYG, a release from Spanish publisher Edge Entertainment, and now this one.
This new version will be released in German by Heidelberger, in a “Nordic languages” edition by Lautapelit, and an Italian/English edition by What’s Your Game? – but note that since Z-Man Games holds the rights to distribute the game in the U.S., Canada, Australia and New Zealand, this version will not be available in those countries.

English speakers who do want a copy can look for an English/Italian version at the Heidelberger booth (9-108) at Spiel 08. You can also preorder a copy, which retails for €13, by writing preorders@whatsyourgame.it with the number of copies desired and the name of the person collecting them. Rules for the new edition are available on the What’s Your Game? website.

I greatly applaud the publisher for the following: 1) The decision to republish, which will expose a fabulous game to more players 2) Using a system to make the combos easier to discern 3) Removing the variant and the eye-sore that came along with it which disrupted the art on the cover of the current English version (I know, I know - Marketing) 4) Using iconography as opposed to text on the cards is a good thing for me from an aesthetics point of view (plus, it helps deal with language issues) I likely would have done several things differently, however: 1) The confusion between “flip” and “unflip” which trips up beginners hasn’t been made much easier. The only difference I can tell between the two icons is the color, which will be marginally helpful for beginners, and I would imagine completely unhelpful for those have difficulty distinguishing red from green. 2) There are numbers EVERYWHERE, which, although practical, are going to confuse beginners as well. Perhaps instead of a bubble with a 2 on it with the wild card symbol meaning ‘any two cards’ (as shown on the dark angel), there could have been 2 separate wild card bubbles. Also, the numbers which link the combos could have been letters, or any icon, really, as they are just used for matching purposes. Maybe little swords and castles and whatnot. 3) I haven’t decided what I think of the “you” vs. “everyone” icon. Though, it’s probably fine. Anyhoo, that’s my take. Ha - well, not exactly. The current version is great, and this new version is going to be great, too. But, if we’re talking about how to make things better, there are my two cents. I just really enjoy the game! Posted by Anthony Rubbo on Sep 24, 2008 at 12:27 PM | #

I like some of the changes, but dislike many of the others. Flip/unflip will be disastrous for color-blind people and, honestly, not too great for me; I’d rather see a word or a distinct icon than have to remember colors. I’m not thrilled with the numbering of cards on first blush, but objectively I think it will be a better system. Anyhow, make sure to get me a copy when you order yours, Anthony....
