Adam Spielt Closing

Longtime German game retailer AdamSpielt.de is closing down at the end of 2007. Here’s a statement the retailer sent to customers:

After one and a half years of tests, trials and experiments in the on-line business, we have reached the decision to cease selling games via mailorder. The decision was not easy for us. We have struggled to compete in a difficult environment, but we must realize that we did not succeed. The number of competitors that offer the same goods as we do, only for lower prices, lead to a severe decrease in turnover. We had to evaluate our business model. Did we purchase goods at overpriced conditions? Did we strive for too high a margin? We have constantly asked questions, and tried to fight costs with verve, until we reached a point where it was increasingly difficult for us to identify with the service we provided. Less than that is impossible, and even more: undesirable. Therefore we ask for your understanding that we have to cancel all existing back- and pre-orders, effective immediately.

In a couple of days we will begin our clearance sale. All items in stock will be offered at reduced prices. Please use our on-line shop to order. Orders will be accepted and delivered only while supply lasts. Orders will be processed in chronological order, so the earlier an order is placed, the more likely it is to get all items desired.

Adam Spielt was one of my first stops when I started getting in to Eurogames, but now it’s time will end. Thanks for providing all the good games while you could!

Truly sad news. For many years, the arrival of one of those huge, carefully packed Adam Spielt boxes on my doorstep was cause for absolute ecstasy. They were the source for more otherwise unobtainable European games than could be imagined. And their printed catalogues, even if I couldn’t read German, were worth saving for the pictures and age/time/player number information alone. In recent years, however, as the dollar sunk against the euro and more US retailers started carrying games not released by US companies, my Adam Spielt orders subsided. I wish them the best and I thank them for their excellent, excellent service. I only hope this isn’t the beginning of a larger shakeout in the online game retailing world.

That’s really a shame, i’ll miss their box within a box, and their willingness to change orders up til the last minute.  Good luck to Friedhelm and crew in any future endevours, you guys were great!

I agree with Bob. Their excellent service and care were hallmarks of how to pack and send games to excited people overseas. The standard two or three day return from Germany to the UK never ceased to amaze me.

OK who do I turn to now to get my German game fixes?

That is sad news indeed.

Add my laments to the list.  Adam Spielt was far and away the best when it came to ordering from Germany.  They set a very high bar - a de facto standard - with their high level of customer service.  They will be greatly missed.

Sad news indeed. I’ve done most of my german purchases from them and everything has been great. I’ve tried others, and yet everytime come to the conclusion that adamspielt is the one giving the best service and have the most games available. German Amazon can compete with the service (and price) but I have more than once added a game to my order there only to find out at the check-out that it’s delivered from another seller and therefor not available outside of Germany. As long as the page says ‘Versand auf amazon.de’ they have just as good service as Adamspielt. They are however nowhere near Adamspielt in the number of games they offer though. I’ll probably be using playme.de for my bulk orders in the future: Good prices, large selection of games, but almost no communication from them after you’ve placed your order. You get an order confirmation, then the creditcard company shows that you have been charged with *a* purchase from them and then a few days later the box shows up at your house. And if you’re lucky everything you ordered is in there.
