Agricola Wins Deutscher Spiele Preis
Uwe Rosenberg’s Agricola, already the recipient of a special Spiel des Jahres award for best complex game, has won the 2008 Deutscher Spiele Preis, an award which is voted on each year by the gaming public. Stone Age by Michael Tummelhofer placed second, while Michael Rieneck and Stefan Stadler’s Cuba placed third. For the top ten games in the DSP voting, visit the link above.
In the children’s game category, Reiner Knizia bookended his Spiel des Jahres win for Wer War’s? with this year’s DSP. Jamaica, published by Malcolm Braff, Sébastien Pauchon and Bruno Cathala through their own GameWorks company, received the Golden Feather award for best rulebook. Congrats to all the winners!

How on earth did Jamaica win a prize for that insanity of an A2 single sheet that goes all over the place?! Yes, I can see that a flowchart based system is a valid way of doing it, but for some reason it bugged me enormously. I will concede that it does look good though (as does the rest of the game.) David, the rules for Jamaica might be unwieldy, but they work to integrate the theme into the learning process for the game – you sail from island to island to “discover” each rule. In the end, the cleverness of the design beat the how-do-we-refold-this issue, and I think it would be great if the win inspires other designers and publishers to attempt such efforts.
