Altura – the Revised Big Boss – Gets the Axe

Altura: die Hauptstadt von Alturien, a revised version of 1994’s Big Boss, was due out from Pro Ludo sometime in 2008, but designer Wolfgang Kramer has said that this edition will no longer be published. On the news page of his website Kramer explains that Pro Ludo will no longer be producing its own games, as with such recent projects as the revised Ave Caesar and Der Markt von Alturien, and will instead once again be devoted to distributing German-language editions of games from companies like Asmodée and Days of Wonder.

Kramer will now be looking for a new publisher for this game – despite this version being all but complete – and it’s unlikely to appear in the large and expensive version that Pro Ludo had been planning. Check out the link above for pics of what could have been.

I regret the cancellation of Alturia, but even more that this probably means there will be no expansions published for Ave Caesar.

This was one remake that I was eagerly awaiting.  I hope some publisher will pick it up.  Sad news.

I know nothing about the game, butthe images are intriguing. It reminds me of a combination of Torres and Skybridge. Too bad.

Pro Ludo had been getting raked over the coals pretty harshly in the German fan forums over the past few months due to their numerous delays and difficulties with getting games out on time, so this move doesn’t come as a complete surprise - they are probably much more comfortable in the role of Distributor instead of Publisher.

No huge loss with the Big Boss reprint - I’m nearly 100% certain that it’ll show up elsewhere - but losing the Ave Caesar expansion tracks sucks.

When I contacted them a while back to schedule an appointment to look at prototypes, they had informed me that they had a “full program” for the next year already.  I wonder if anything else got cancelled?  Either that, or they already knew about the change in business plan and had put a stop to new submissions.

I would be suprised if Asmodées CEO Pierre Gaubil had not consequently stopped all game projects of Pro Ludo, as he is not known to be man of compromises. This would not only concern Alturia and Ave Caesar Track Expansion, but also:
- Rise of Nations
- Age of Piracy (Merchants and Maurauders)
- Age of Empires III (German Edition)
