Andrea “Liga” Ligabue: Italian fairs are growing bigger - Ludica

Game events in Italy are quickly growing both in size and number. Together with our flagship, Lucca Comics & Games, other fair are finding places and audience. First of all PLAY: the Game Festival, the event that inherits the tradition of ModCon, the gamers con, scoring more than 10,000 visitors in the first edition (next edition is scheduled for 13.14 Marco 2010).

Despite the fact that big cities usually have problem arranging big events, both Torino and Milano seems to climbing up the slope. Ludica, Milano, scores 7,500 visitors in the first edition and much more better in the second edition, 27-29 March 2009, thanks to the concomitance with Cartoomics, the Comics, Cartoons, Collecting and Games Exhibition. Last edition of Cartoomics got 45,000 visitors but only thanks to the concomitance with the Beer Hall. This year Cartoomics and Ludica started an adventure together. Go on reading to see the official Ludica press release ...

Cartoomics, the Comics, Cartoons, Collecting and Games Exhibition, came to a close yesterday with a record number of visitors. 22,000 visitors flocked to the stands and exhibitions set up at the fair during the three-day event.

A success which proves that Fiera Milano is not just a place for business, but a meeting point that opens the city’s doors to new initiatives, such as Cartoomics. It keeps the ties between Milan and the grounds of the fair alive, while underlining the importance of the area as a location for culture and entertainment open to citizens, within the scope of the tradition which see the halls of fieramilanocity as a magical destination that is always capable of astonishing visitors.
Reasons for visiting Cartoomics were manifold. It was the only place where Manga fans could find rare pieces, while historical cartoon lovers could not miss out on the chance to see the first issue of Amazing on display - the American comic book that confirmed the birth of science fiction in 1926. Visitors even included those who just simply wanted to take a trip down memory lane and relive their childhood, leafing through the pages of a Candy Candy or Lupin sticker album.
This edition of Cosplay City was also a record-breaker, registering the presence of more than 700 cosplayers.

Ludica – the Games and Videogames Festival for games of all ages – was also besieged by players of all ages, who put themselves to the test in riveting games and championships.
15 exhibitors, 22 self publishers, 9 associations, clubs, play clubs and playgroups engrossed the public and enriched the play area.
In this renewed edition, Ludica fully reconfirmed its mission: to be a games festival not just for fans in the sector, but for neophytes and the simply curious as well, who want to spend a few minutes of their time having some clean, healthy fun while sitting in front of a chess board or a board game.

An infinite array of premiers and novelties were also presented: Huntik Secrets & Seekers, the Collectable Card game by Upperdeck – the Italian edition of Dominion by Stupor Mundi – Age of Conan by Nexus Editrice - Giro d’Italia by Ghenos Game - Kaleidos, Tokyo Train and Eclipse distributed by Oliphante – Galloping Pigs by Red Glove. Many authors also attended the Fair and presented their latest creations.

A tournament of Sfida Diamagic’s Wizards of Mickey was held, as was the National Warangel Tournament and a simultaneous multi-game event by Project Abstrakta, sponsored by Focus Brain Trainer. Traditional games such as Scrabble and Subbuteo also registered an unexpected success, and their respective associations saw affluence triple compared to the previous year.

The Self Publishing Area once again proved itself to be fully up to the situation, with 222 game authors, 5 associations and an infinite array of new games compared to the previous edition.

Ludicarena - the space dedicated to videogames - was also a rip-roaring success and was chock-a-block with new features this year. In fact, it played host to the World Cyber Games Italia, the so-called “Videogame Olympics,” for the first time this year. The event was organised and promoted by Progaming Italia and officially sponsored at an international level by Samsung. The area gave videogame players the chance to challenge each other to exciting contests and tournaments, such as Starcraft, Guitar Hero, PES09 and Asphalt 4, helping the best players qualify for the national championships.

A great success with the public that pleased the over 200 exhibitors present – 20% more than the previous edition - and laid a solid base for Cartoomics-Ludica 2010, which will be held at Fieramilanocty on March 26-28.

We would like to say a warm thank you all the exhibitors, partners, associations, authors and self publishers for their participation and the support provided for the event.

The next Ludica will be held in the same place: Hall 4 of Fieramilanocity on November 13-15, 2009.
Once again, Ludica will be held in concomitance with LudicArena and other highly attractive events for the public.
