Ask Days of Wonder: A Meatier Memoir?
Q: Is Memoir ‘44 losing ground, now that BattleLore and C&C Ancients are available and thought to be superior by many gamers? Do you have any plans to add advanced rules or more complexity to the M44 rules?
A: None of the various C&C games are necessarily superior to the others. They each appeal to a different type of player—primarily through theme, but also in the nuances built into the game play. Memoir ‘44 is unique in the fun-to-complexity and fun-to-playtime ratio it offers, and I feel we’ve done a good job of capitalizing on these unique aspects with expansions like the Eastern Front and Pacific Theater.
So in that sense, you won’t see us depart from what we believe to be some of the game’s strong points.

I think DoW has it right. Even if BattleLore were unquestionably superior as a game, the theming so clearly appeals to different players that cannibalization should be a minor concern. Posted by Jonathan Degann on Sep 11, 2007 at 11:19 AM | #

I’m a big fan of both Battlelore & Memoir ‘44 (pity my wallet, my friends...) and I find that they scratch very different itches. The largest difference is time… my 6 year old son was smart enough to notice the other day that, “Hey, Dad, we can play Memoir scenarios in one sitting, but we usually have to take a couple of days to play Battlelore.” (That translates into 60 min - including set-up - for Memoir and 120 min + - including set-up - for Battlelore.)
