Ask Fantasy Flight: How Do You Spell Success?
Q: What are the most successful games you have produced both financially and critically?
A: Financially, it has been World of Warcraft: the Board Game, while in terms of numbers sold, that honor goes to Citadels.
Critically, it’s hard to say. Would you classify “critically” as just well-known reviewers or the everyday critics who buy our games? In any case, Arkham Horror is quite well thought of by both groups, everyone seems to either own it or play it at the house of their friend with the largest table. (Kevin Wilson’s joke is that, with each large expansion, people are just that much closer to playing on the floor.)
StarCraft: the Board Game has been getting some really good buzz from the copies we sold at Gen Con and Penny Arcade Expo, and we’re really excited about that. Corey Konieczka has been getting some much-deserved attention for his first big-box game—it’s great to see him getting kudos from the public after he’s been working on this game for so long!

Interesting. The two critically acclaimed FFG games that first occurred to me are Descent (which everyone seems to either own or play--it seems every other gamer I know is a fanatical Descent player) and A Game of Thrones (a very well thought of game, by both Eurogamers and ATers). I wonder if those games are more popular in my gaming circles than with gamers in general. Posted by Larry Levy on Sep 8, 2007 at 12:03 AM | #

Locally for me the releases from this years GenCon (in particular Dust, Tannhäuser, and StarCraft) have been everywhere… Posted by Ray Petersen on Sep 8, 2007 at 07:22 AM | #

I was surprised to see WoW (which I enjoy quite a bit), but then again, it may have attracted some of the 9 million non-boardgaming WoW online game fans. Citadels? Well-deserved. Posted by Robert Ramirez on Sep 8, 2007 at 10:14 AM | #

WoW: The Boardgame was highly promoted in the WoW computer community. That’s how I ended up getting it. They had many pre-orders when they offered the brass figurines of the toons in the game. Posted by Kevin Rutherford on Sep 8, 2007 at 10:41 AM | #

I expected the LotR game by Reiner to be the most successful in terms of numbers. I thought Christian said something about 1 million copies sold in his interview with Aldie and Derk 2 years back… Posted by Surya Van Lierde on Sep 8, 2007 at 04:46 PM | #

Kevin, WoW was the only game in my collection my brother has willingly wanted to try out....because he was one of the 9 million online gamers. But unfortunately, it wasn’t enough for him to go and buy it. long ways from becoming a boardgamer… Posted by Robert Ramirez on Sep 8, 2007 at 11:36 PM | #
