Ask Fantasy Flight: Thoughts on Theme
Q: Fantasy Flight is quite well known for games that are full of rich theme. Is a strong theme one of the main things you use to look for new games to publish? What other criteria do you use when you are selecting new games?
A: Well, the most important question we have to ask ourselves is, can we make a fun game? When we have a licensed property such as StarCraft or the Beowulf film, the theme is already there. The question becomes how you incorporate the theme to make an enjoyable game.
Q: Are there any other classic games—along the lines of Arkham Horror, Britannia, Warrior Knights—which Fantasy Flight is interested in reproducing in the coming years?
A: Well, you probably saw our announcement that we made at Gen Con about the classic Eon lines that we’ll be doing starting next year with Cosmic Encounter and Borderlands, along with the “Wheels within Wheels” game system that was originally published as Frank Herbert’s Dune, so we’re absolutely interested in taking a new look at classic games as well as bringing out brand new titles for board gamers to enjoy. —Jeremy Stomberg
