Ask Jay: No, No, No, No, Maybe and Race for the Galaxy

Q: Do you have plans to release English versions of any of the following Kosmos titles due out at Spiel 07: Anno 1701, Golden Compass, or Perry Rhodan?

A: I have not been approached about them and have no plans now. It is possible we will have discussions on these at Essen.

Q: Since Rio Grande prints a lot of Uwe Rosenberg games. I was wondering whether Rio Grande will be working at all with Lookout Games to publish Rosenberg’s Agricola?

A: This is the first I have heard of Agricola.

Q: Is there any more detailed information on the release dates for La Citta, Medieval Merchant and El Caballero?

A: No, I have been very busy and those projects have been delayed.

Q: Is there an expected release date for Roma II?

A: Not that I have heard, no.

Q: The tiles in the Uberplay version of Ra have icons to help you remember which ones are kept between rounds. Will the new Rio Grande edition include these useful icons?

A: I am considering that, yes.

Q: What’s the latest status on Race for the Galaxy?

A: All the work is done and now at the printer. I am waiting for a specific date, but I expect it to be ready next month. —Jay Tummelson

"The tiles in the Uberplay version of Ra have icons to help you remember which ones are kept between rounds.”

The intention of the icon (I think) was to be a life preserver, evocative, supposedly, of saving the tiles. However, it looks to many like an X, which would suggest to discard them. I’d like to see something a little less ambiguous if anyone is going to do it.

If people want these, I suggest finding a way to work them deeper into the designs. I would prefer colored borders or something less intrusive in the delightful artwork.

Of course, I have the alea/RGG version so I need not worry…

Since Golden Compass is coming to the silver screen as a big-budget mega blockbuster movie, publishing the game might be a good idea =) It’s not a gamer’s game, though, but a solid family race game with some pretty nifty ideas (it’s coming out in Finnish, I did the translation).

Jay, now that you’ve heard of it, you may want to check with Lookout about Agricola.  It looks very interesting and the advanced version will almost certainly need translated cards in order to be played by English speakers.

I’d second Mikko on Golden Compass.  I don’t know if it’ll be the second coming of Harry Potter, but it has a broad fan base.

I’d love to see the Perry Rhodan game, but US fans of that franchise are probably few and far between.

That said, I think a Tom Swift may have potential.

I would strongly recommend switching the symbols, so that the red X appears on the tiles that are removed after each round (e.g., floods, civs, gold, gods), rather than on the tiles that are kept from round to round (river, monument, pharaohs).

I’d like to know if there is any timeline for a RGG printing of “Cuba”

I’m also with those thinking the Uberplay icons spoil the artwork. Of course I knew which were which without thinking about it before Uberplay came along. And I play with an Alea set.

Unfortunately while the board has the information, it’s not exactly obvious. I’m guessing that will be reused unchanged again though (which otherwise is an excellent plan).

Seconded, Tom!  Razzia already has this reversed and the play is better because of it.

This is something (maybe the only thing) that would get me to replace the Uberplay version.

I finished the last book in the His Dark Materials (Golden Compass) series a couple of weeks back. Amazing young adult books that aren’t entirely for children. I am surprised that they are making it into a movie. Kinda dark and heretical.

Agricola could be really involving if it is done correctly. Probably not as deep as Puerto Rico, but the Advanced game may have that same feel of growth and development.
