Ask Jay: Oregon and Race for the Galaxy
Jay Tummelson is preparing for Gen Con, so Ask Jay is taking this week off. That said, here are two items of interest:
- Rio Grande will co-publish Oregon with Hans im Glück, and while the HiG version should definitely be on sale at Essen, the Rio Grande version is in the “cross your fingers and hope” stage. Here’s a short description of the game from designers Åse and Henrik Berg: “Oregon is a family/strategy game with a colonization-theme with a card-driven placement mechanism. The aim of the game is to position farmers and point-giving buildings in the best possible locations on the board.”

Someone asked for a frontier game? - When the third Race for the Galaxy preview appears, it will include a downloadable copy of the rules.
Editor’s note: I bumped this item to show off the Oregon cover.

Well, we also considered adding something like “at the end of the game, the player with the most points wins”, but we thought that might perhaps be giving away a bit too much information :-D Posted by Åse and Henrik Berg on Aug 15, 2007 at 12:07 PM | #

Oregon intrigues me...while I’m not keeping my fingers crossed for Essen, I am hoping for a “Your little brother has died of dysentery” random event card. Posted by Jon Theys on Aug 16, 2007 at 09:18 AM | #

"Someone asked for a frontier game?” LOL! That would be me. And yes, the illustration on the gorgeous box cover conveys exactly the kind of feeling I had when Agricola was being described--the frontier family trying to carve out a place for themselves in the untamed West. But then I look at the description of Oregon: “The aim of the game is to position farmers and point-giving buildings in the best possible locations on the board.” Hmm. Sounds more like a Wild West version of New England to me, probably thematic, but unlikely to have the actions have much to do with the theme. I like New England, but you have to admit its association with its backstory is tenuous at best. Still, this is wild speculation on my part, so I eagerly await news about the game. After all, it’s Hans im Gluck. And ya gotta like that box cover. Posted by Larry Levy on Aug 16, 2007 at 09:24 AM | #

Titles with “Oregon” will always set up for Americans comparisons with the computer game “Oregon Trail”, which most have played while children as part of American History class at school. http://www.oregontrailshrine.com It’d be interesting to see the “build your character stats” kind of game taken to a frontier setting. Candamir did this as an “explore the forest” kind of game. Most Americans expect an Oregon title to be solitare and about surviving the journey obstacles of travelling to Oregon.
