Ask Jay: Thebes? Yes, Thebes!
This week Jay clears up the confusion surrounding the Jenseits von Theben/Thebes issue and looks ahead to what will hopefully be more releases for Spiel 07:
Thebes
Q: What is the final published name of the international edition of the Queen game from Peter Prinz? Is it Thebes?
A: Yes, it is—to my surprise.
Q: There’s not a separate RGG version, correct—
A: Yes, that is correct.
Q: Only an international version with English, German, French and Spanish rules called Thebes?
A: Yes, again!
Editor’s note: To fill in between the lines, Rio Grande Games does not publish or copublish titles from Queen Games; Rio Grande distributes an international edition of Queen titles, and Queen is responsible for all decisions regarding the naming of these titles. If you look at your copies of Roma or Aqua Romana, for example, you won’t find the Rio Grande label anywhere on the box. Thus, Jay was as surprised as anyone else about the name change. Hope this finally settles the issue!
From Amigo to Rio Grande?
Q: Will you be releasing an English version of Ladybohn, a Bohnanza expansion that Amigo released earlier in 2007?
A: Yes.
Q: Do you plan on releasing Venedig or Walhalla in English, both titles that Amigo released in Germany?
A: No.
Q: In your recent newsletter, you mentioned releasing the new Amigo “4 in 1” collection of card games. Are you keeping this title, or changing it to something else?
A: It will be called: “Mü and a lot more”
Editor’s note: This collection contains four previously released trick-taking games, although only one of them has been released in English. The games are:
Kosmos duels
Q: What’s your policy on printing the line of Kosmos two-player games? You seem to print most of them, but not all of them? Or maybe a better question would be, “Which of them should I pick up in German?
A: I try to publish the best, but not all.
Q: Earlier in 2007, you mentioned that you were interested in releasing Rösenkonig now that Kosmos was doing a new edition. Has there been any progress on that release?
A: There is slow progress, but it will happen.
Gen Con
Q: RGG isn’t running a demo area in the exhibit hall at Gen Con this year. Why not? Does this have anything to do with the donation to the open gaming library they are starting?
A: I do think this is better support for the gamers who choose to attend Gencon than having a booth in the exhibit hall. By donating to the library, I make it possible for players to “rent” my games without cost (to them). Again, I think this is better support for gamers than I have offered in the past by simply being in the exhibit hall.
Essen possibilities
Q: Is Hans im Glück co-publishing the Samurai tile game?
A: No, they are not.
Q: Are you co-publishing the Ra dice game with anyone or doing it on your own?
A: No, I am going alone, but multi-lingual.
Q: Can you tell us more about Chateau Roquefort?
A: The designers are Bernhard Weber and Jens-Peter Schliemann, and the co-publishers are Zoch and Gigamic. (It is known in Germany as Burg Appenzell.) Players search a castle for cheese and try to avoid traps. The playing surface is multi-layered and plays within the game box.
Q: Will the Samurai tile game, Ra dice game, or Chateau Roquefort be out by Essen?
A: I hope all will make it, but time is getting tight :-)
