Ask Jay: Tiling the World with Carcassonne
Q: After Carcassonne: Abbey and Mayor, there is apparently another Carcassonne expansion on the horizon. Adam Spielt lists a sixth expansion called Count, King and Consort that will be bundled with the main game. Is Rio Grande releasing this expansion in English? If so, can you tell us about the Consorts? (I presume that the Count and King refer to earlier Carc expansions.)
A: The 6th expansion is a combination of the small boxed expansions I have done. I understand it will also have a few new tiles, which I will make available somehow.
Q: I bought Carcassonne Big Box on the premise that this would be a way to carry all the Carcassonne variants around in one case, and I guess I naively assumed there wouldn’t be any more expansions. Now with Abbey and Mayor on the horizon, as well as, apparently, Graf, König und Konsorten, there are at least two more.
Do these and any future expansions suggest there might be another “all-in-one” Carcassonne on the horizon, such as Big Box? And, at the very least, will these new expansions have any symbols on the tiles, as do those in Big Box, to help separate them from the base game and other expansions?
A: The new expansions will have symbols on them. As for the possibility of another Big Box, that is up to Hans im Glück, and I have heard nothing from them yet.
Q: Can you tell us what roles the followers (meeples) will take in Carcassonne New World?
A: They will be similar to those in the original game. —Jay Tummelson
