Ask Rio Grande Games: Too Many Rules!

Q: How much of the game price of Thebes is due to the extra full-color copies of the rules in six languages. These are very nice full-color rules that must raise the printing price by many dollars, in addition to adding to the shipping weight. Wouldn’t an English-only version save game buyers here in the USA quite a bit of money?

A: Actually, printed rules, even full-color, are fairly inexpensive. In any case, it is less expensive to make a multi-lingual edition than to make six single language editons, which is why Queen has chosen to do that.

Q: Some of the last Rio Grande productions, like Arkadia and That’s Life, have multilingual rules (including Italian). Is that something you plan to follow in the future for games that have materials that are substantially language independent? In co-productions, do you have any say in which languages rules will printed?

A: For the Ravensburger and Queen multi-lingual games I offer, I have no input into which languages are included, but I do plan to continue offering the titles from these two companies.

Q: Have you ever tried to get some of your games into venues such as museum/zoo gift shops, Discovery Channel stores, etc.? It seems that many of the ones with historical (or animal or railroad) themes would be a great fit for such places.

A: I have tried on a few occasions with very limited success. —Jay Tummelson

It seems like the museum/zoo gift shop question has come up a few times before…

Some people don’t seem to get that Jay only does distribution for the Queen and Ravensburger (and Ghenos and some others I guess) and that he has no input on the components or rules.
