Ask Z-Man Games: More Ubongo Please

Q: Has Ubongo sold well enough to warrant Z-Man picking up Ubongo Extreme and/or Ubongo Mini as well?

A: Yes, though I don’t know if I want to do Ubongo Mini. I am meeting Kosmos at Essen to discuss Extreme.

Q: Is Pandemic a title that will appeal to non-gamers? That is, how gamey is it? How hard will it be for non-gamers to learn how to play?

A: Hmmm, I guess so. I mean who knows, right? Some non-gamers will like it and some won’t—just like gamers. I think the rules are approachable for non-gamers: the rules are not difficult at all. So in that way, I think it possible to spring it on non-gamers and give it a try. I will have rules uploaded when they are laid out.

Q: What is the most enjoyable thing about being a games publisher?

A: I get to see the games I want to play and to share them with others. I get to travel and go to game shows and though I don’t play as much as I’d like (at least at the big shows), it’s still great meeting people, playing games, and visiting new places. —Zev Shlasinger

Well, now that sounds great, but now we have to know what is the least enjoyable thing about being a game publisher? :-)

I’ve played an early prototype of Pandemic, so I can take a guess. If a gamer is teaching non-gamers, Pandemic should work quite well.

Part of this is the nature of co-op games. Even the unholy amalgamation of rules comprising Arkham Horror is a breeze to teach non-gamers. They are helping each other both learn the rules and the game.

Pandemic seems at about a Thurm und Taxis level of rules complexity. Combine that with the co-op group help element, and you are good.

Heh, now I want to know even more.

By the way, ordered 1960 yesterday, looking forward to it more than anything in recent memory!  Best of luck with this very promising release.

Speaking of which, I’m wondering if there’s competition among publishers for a game like 1960 (i.e., the second game by an award-winning designer) and if so, how publishers like yourself compete to get the new Jason Matthews game?  Or is it just whoever snaps it up first?
