Ask Zev: The Czech Connection

Q: I thought Z-Man was considering/planning/negotiating to print Through the Ages in the US. What happened?

A: We were in talks about it even though another company was also vying for the rights. But honestly I tested the game at Essen and was not thrilled by it and I thought it would be expensive to produce. Finally, since I was already talking to them about their other games, I thought getting two of them was enough. (Prophecy is the first game, Arena the second.)

So, is someone else going to publish this?

According to BGN, FRED.

FRED has it scheduled for October or November.

I suppose FRED won’t get it to Essen?
I still haven’t seen much more info about the re-release, and I’m one of those who missed Essen last year and really enjoyed to play TtA.

Meanwhile I may enjoy the brilliant adventure game Prophecy, which is one of the best in it’s genre.

On the other hand I can’t understand why Arena is republished. I have the old edition and it was quite a yawn. More like a CCG without the collection part. You have to know the deck, but it’s not interesting enough to come that far. Also I disliked the bluffing elements in it.

For those interested in Arena, you can find a description and the old rules at my site:

But I suppose it’s remade in some ways?

"But honestly I tested the game at Essen and was not thrilled by it and I thought it would be expensive to produce”

That sound’s like a future “I’m kicking myself for letting that one go” moment. ;)

I probably could kick myself but I just couldn’t pull the trigger to do it - it just didn’t grab me. And I know I’d had to have cleared up the rules which means I really had to get to know the game and I just couldn’t do it - no time and again, no love for the game.

Business-wise it probably should have been a slam-dunk decision, but I also believe at the time it first appeared, Graenaland was getting the most press and TTA was getting some great but some ok and not-so-good reviews.

All that (and more) led me to say ‘no’ to it.

Nice.  That was my question.  Thanks for the answer Zev.

The only reason I asked is because I know this game would have gotten the perfect facelift (ie better quality components) it needed in the hands of Zman Games.  I mean, check out 1960: The making of the president.  It looks amazing.

Now I’ll have to cross my fingers, and hope that FRED will do as well.
