Black Industries Nixes Talisman, RPG Line
In January 2007, Black Industries made a splash by announcing a new edition of Talisman; this January, the company has pulled the plug on its entire board game and role-playing line of products. From the press release posted on the Black Industries website:
| Black Industries regret to announce that Dark Heresy: Disciples of the Dark Gods out in September [2008] will be the final product to be released from Black Industries.
Kevin Rountree General Manager of BL Publishing said, “As a result of the continued and impressive success of our core novels business, which we have built around 40K and Warhammer, we have decided to focus all of our efforts on growing this part of our business. Black Industries has seen fantastic success, most recently with Talisman and Dark Heresy. This change does not take away from that achievement; rather it allows BL Publishing to focus on producing the best novels we can. This is a purely commercial decision and will enable us to carry on the huge growth that we have recently been experiencing with our novels.” |
The producers of the podcast 2d6 Feet in a Random Direction received this message from a BI developer who asked to remain anonymous:
Black Industries is being dissolved by GW, a decision staff and writers were ignorant of right up until it was made public, and were entirely unaware. I can leave you to imagine the taste of that…

As the developer notes, this “purely commercial decision” comes just a few days after BI announced that its new Dark Heresy RPG core rulebook sold out on preorders alone. Retailers have reported that buyers of the book have already asked to return it since it won’t be supported past 2008.
The hope for Talisman expansions dies yet again…
