Bombay, Coming in March from Ystari
Bombay will be the next release from Ystari Games, and Ystari founder Cyril Demaegd is the game’s designer. When TricTrac.net announced the game in early January 2009, the game was described as being Ystari’s simplest title yet, something that will work for both the general public and experienced gamers. Says Demaegd, ”Bombay is quite simple and the reason for this is simple, too. Amyitis took two years to develop (of course not full time) and at the end of the process I was really exhausted and I swore to myself that for the next one, I’d try something simpler for once!”
Your goal in Bombay is to make more money than other players by selling silk, earning clients, and building palaces – think of it as another version of a traveling salesman game but with cute plastic elephants.
Players have three action points to spend on each turn (with multiple turns in a set, and 3-5 sets in the game), and those action points can be spent moving your elephant around the board, buying silk at trading posts, selling silk in cities, building a palace, and earning money. The cost of the different colors of silk varies in each set, although some colors are always rare and provide bonuses when sold. The selling prices for silk fluctuate in the cities based on a simple stock market-style mechanism – but no city will take all kinds of silk, so you need to keep that elephant in motion.
In a change from previous releases, Bombay will be distributed in Germany and the U.S. by Asmodee. Says Demaegd, “[Asmodee is] now our new distributor in Germany. As they helped us a lot for the plastic bits and during the quotation process, I thought it was fair to let them distribute the game in the USA. Of course it doen’t mean I won’t work with Jay anymore. Jay is an excellent partner and we’ve got plenty of projects ahead, but Bombay is an exception.”
Bombay is for 2-5 players with a price of €40 in Europe and is due to be released in March 2009. Boardgame News will publish a full game preview in early February.
This game has been added to Gone Cardboard.

€40?! For the simplest Ystari title? I don’t think so. Posted by Christian Brunner on Jan 8, 2009 at 08:22 AM | #

I see a “y” in that title, but not an “s.” Strange. Posted by Nate Owens on Jan 8, 2009 at 09:42 AM | #

Nate, I’ve heard that the full title got cut off in the photo. The full title is allegedly “Bombays”. Posted by David Reed on Jan 8, 2009 at 01:36 PM | #

I think this looks rather interesting and the board on BGG makes me think this could be fun. I think it would be something different for my collection? It’s officially on the radar. Posted by Ryan B. on Jan 8, 2009 at 11:57 PM | #

As you notice Nate, it is the first title to contain only the Y, and not the S. It was something funny as long as it didn’t constraint too much the choice of the name (and I’m “responsible” of this “Y-S” rule). Posted by Thomas Cauët on Jan 9, 2009 at 08:52 AM | #

Hey, props for not retheming this one with little bombers flying around the countryside, trying to match bomb types with the most valuable targets. You know, so the game could be called Bomb Bays. :D pk Posted by Patrick Korner on Jan 9, 2009 at 09:38 PM | #
