Breaking Every Rule: Teaching Games at College

Oh, to be young and in college once more. This spring, at the University of California at San Diego, Roger Ngim is teaching a course—check that, a required course—on games as part of an introduction to humanities for 300+ first-year students. Says Ngim, “My personal interest is in strategy board games, and that will be a strong focus of the course, but I intend to discuss all kinds of games and their cultural meanings.”

If you want to follow the course as it develops, head to Breaking Every Rule, a blog that Ngim started in order to publicly work through the material that he’ll cover. “I’m pretty excited by the opportunity teach this course and push the scholarly study of games at little closer to mainstream academia,” he says. “I would love more feedback as I get down to the nuts and bolts of planning.”

Just to clarify, the course fulfills a requirement all students must meet in their freshman year. The students will be able to choose among several courses with different topics, including mine.
