Conclave, New Game from a New Designer at Spiel 08
First-time designer Pieter Boots will release Conclave, a co-production of Duyfken Games and Vendetta Games, at Spiel 08. Here’s a write-up of the game from Boots himself:
Do you want to vote on a Pope? Now it’s possible as Conclave recreates the event in which a new Pope is elected. You represent one of the factions within the Vatican, and your goal is to become the most powerful.
During a conclave you know each player has to vote for a cardinal, but how will they vote? And how can you convince them how to vote? Who is your friend, who is your foe? Make your own plan, see what the others are up to, but most importantly, vote tactically and become the most powerful faction within the Vatican.
The first printing of Conclave – which is for 3-6 players with a playing time of 45-60 minutes and cost of €15 – is limited to 250 copies, and preorders will be accepted through Dutch publisher Vendetta Games.

Is there any word on whether the rules will be available in English and whether components will be language neutral? I’m willing to work with games in several languages, but I have no Dutch language skills… Posted by David Reed on Sep 17, 2008 at 12:46 PM | #

Rules will be included for English, German and Dutch, which sort of falls between English and German in various ways. Side story: When my wife and I lived in the Netherlands, she noticed that if a Dutch word didn’t have an English cognate, it typically had a German one. Since she had studied German for 6+ years, she could understand much of what she read or heard in Dutch. Eric Posted by W. Eric Martin on Sep 17, 2008 at 01:19 PM | #

Good to hear about English rules being included. Now I have to add this to my list of games to consider. I know about the cognates and the relative closeness of Dutch to older forms of both German and English (I have worked with Dutch-speaking graduate students and post-docs), but it doesn’t make parsing rules any easier! Through past experience, I’ve also found that many gamers have issues playing a game in a language they’re not familiar with. The less familiar the language is, the harder it is to convince them… Posted by David Reed on Sep 17, 2008 at 09:03 PM | #
