Convention Preview News: Agricola in English?
Lookout Games is debuting Uwe Rosenberg’s Agricola at Spiel 07 in mid-October, and although the game includes 300+ cards that bear some amount of German text, English speakers can also have a go at the game thanks to the monumental efforts of Melissa Rogerson at Gone Gaming. In late September 2007, Melissa posted a long account of her efforts to translate Agricola. Her translation will be available on the BoardGameGeek Agricola page at some point, but for now, she’s included PDF links to the rules and glossary on a BGG thread about her translation efforts.

Melissa’s Gone Gaming column is a fabulous account of what goes into a rules translation, and it includes great lines such as this one: “There were some emails back and forth to Germany about how exactly a fireplace worked to turn animals into food, and when you could bake bread in the various bread-baking facilities—all answered with a look at the relevant card. Too easy!”
Fantastic job, Melissa!

It is indeed an informative and entertaining article and I recommend checking it out. I’ve been excited about this design since it was announced, but my enthusiasm has been tempered by the language gap. Thanks to Melissa’s work, though, this might be a game I’ll actually be able to play. However, I’m still REALLY hoping that someone does an English language version of this. Melissa, Your work on the initial translation may be exactly what makes an official English version feasible. Thanks, whether or not it is actually made. Posted by Jonathan Franklin on Oct 1, 2007 at 09:13 AM | #
