Convention Preview News: Details on QWG’s El Capitán (aka the New Tycoon)

Mike Doyle, who is handling artwork and design for El Capitán—game #3 in QWG’s Master Print Edition—has revealed on his Art Play blog that the game is, at heart, a remake of Tycoon, designed by Wolfgang Kramer and Horst-Rainer Rösner and released by Jumbo in 1998.

But Doyle quickly points out that the game has been revamped to such a degree, both in game design and artistic look, that it should really be viewed as an entirely new game. El Capitán takes players to the Mediterranean Sea during the 16th century when Spain, Portugal and Italy all competed for dominance—when they weren’t competing against pirates, of course. While the action takes place in cities around the Mediterranean, the game will include three Portugese cities that can be added to the game either singly or in other combinations to mix up the game play.

El Capitán is being released by QWG in the Benelux area, Z-Man Games in English-speaking countries, Pro Ludo in Germany, and Lautapelit in Scandinavia. The game is for 2-5 players with a 90 minute playing time. Check out Mike’s posts on El Capitán for multiple art samples from the game.

Tycoon is one of my favorite Kramer designs, so it’s very cool that a new edition of it will be available.  Hopefully, the changes will be improvements or at least won’t detract from the design’s already excellent gameplay.

I agree with Doyle that Tycoon’s cover was pretty bad.  But the board itself was actually very functional and didn’t detract from the game at all.  Thankfully, it looks as if Doyle’s new version is relatively clean and not overly artsy.  I’ll definitely be looking forward to more news about this new version of an old classic.
