Convention Preview News: Jetzt schlägt’s 13! - New for Nuremberg, Dorn Drops Details

Rüdiger Dorn has passed on a brief description of Jetzt schlägt’s 13!, his new card game from Ravensburger due to be released in February 2007:

The active player each turn draws cards from the deck equal to the number of players but does not look at these cards. He then turns one card face-up and gives it to one of the players, including himself; he repeats this process until each player has received exactly one card.

Each card includes a number from 0 to 5—the lower the better—and might also have an action or victory points! Each time a player receives a card, he checks to see whether his total equals 13 or more. If it does, each other player receives VPs from his own cards. The unlucky player with the total of 13 or more discards all his cards.

Possible actions on the cards include veto cards (in order to say no to a card in the future), 13 --> 18 (raising your bust total to 18), lose your last card, and receive 1 or 2 VPs immediately.

This game has been added to the BGN Nuremberg preview.

Sounds like a memory game to me.  (unless all player’s cards are face up?)

Rüdiger sent only a brief description, Phil, but I believe that cards remain face-up after you receive them. Jetzt schlägt’s 13! sounds more like a light push-your-luck game because you’re distributing cards to all the players one by one as they’re revealed. More details when I can…

I guess the higher number cards have higher VP values.  So if you dish out a nasty ‘5’ to someone, they might bust, but it’s worth a lot of VP’s for that player.  Meanwhile, a ‘0’ card won’t hurt a fly, but carries no VP’s.

Whatever it is, Dorn is one of my favorites and I’ll definitely be picking this one up!
