Corunea – RPG and Card Game in One

Corunea, from French publisher Insight Games, is a “role card game,” a term meant to encompass the role-playing feel of the game in addition to the components used for playing it. The base game is available in three starter packs with additional packs of cards sold separately so that players can effectively custom build a character as in a RPG.

Corunea can be played as a one-on-one duel, or as a team game with two teams competing in the same adventure, with the adventure chosen determining the goals and length of the game. A video tutorial of the game is available at the Corunea website. Although Insight Games is a French publisher, the tutorial and the game itself are published in English.

Although the initial game is packaged in the form of a collectible card game (CCG), Insight Games is switching to fixed expansion packs in the future, starting with its Q4 2008 release Brute Force. “We have always wanted Corunea to remain a financially accessible game,” says art director Olivier Lesaint. “We want that clever deck building makes the difference, not the amount of money invested in the cards. This way there are no more doubles, no more missing cards, and all players start on an equal basis.” Additional Extra Packs, as Insight calls them, will be released every four months.
