Cowboy Skeletons from Days of Wonder
Days of Wonder has posted a teaser image for something new. Exactly what the something might be is hard to discern from the image – a skeletal pirate cowboy? – but you’re invited to speculate on what might be in the works at DoW…

Well.... it’s *not* an expansion for BattleLore. Posted by Michael Green on Jan 14, 2009 at 07:16 AM | #

You’re right. It’s probably for their new Memoir ‘44 fantasy line. ;) Posted by James Ridgway on Jan 14, 2009 at 08:56 AM | #

Please, oh please, don’t be another science fiction themed game. If this is something campy, fun and different however… then awesome! A skeleton with a cowboy hat is funny, casual and amusing. It doesn’t take itself too seriously. So it’s a good, promising start to a boardgame. But wait for more, we must… don’t disappoint this time, DOW. I’ve been waiting since 2004! Cheers, Ryan B. Hmmm, Since then: http://blog.daysofwonder.com/2009/01/13/wizards-light-my-fire/en/ http://blog.daysofwonder.com/2009/01/14/amazons-come-and-get-some/en/ Ok, still campy. I’m still hangin in there.... Posted by Ryan B. on Jan 14, 2009 at 09:42 PM | #

I was waiting for the obligatory Ryan Bretsch comment and you didn’t disappoint me! :-) And I’m pretty sure skeletons, wizards, and Amazons means this WON’T be a science fiction game! Posted by Larry Levy on Jan 14, 2009 at 10:05 PM | #

Of course, not, Larry! But no posting last night as I was at the hockey game. Posted by Ryan B. on Jan 16, 2009 at 08:45 AM | #

http://blog.daysofwonder.com/2009/01/15/orcs-none-shall-pass/en/ Orcs. The one board game indicator that always proves the case for the science fiction/fantasy game. Grrr, another fantasy game. Orcs. Again, DOW? Can’t anyone take a look at the games on Wii to find topics that sell to the mainstream? Well, that did it for me.... another DOW disappointment, *assuming* this is tied to the next newly published game. *IF* that is the case, here’s looking forward to 2010, I guess. Orcs. Geez,Louise. WHAT? Skeletons, wizards, and Amazons didn’t clue you in that this was going to be a fantasy game, but Orcs did? Ryan, buddy, wake up and smell the healing potion! :-) And one of these days, we’ll have to have a serious talk about the difference between science fiction and fantasy. They posted Humans this morning, and I was really disappointed. I had hoped to see a little heading that read “Dinosaurs.” That would have made my day. Posted by Nate Owens on Jan 16, 2009 at 11:31 AM | #

Well, I know. I guess I was blinded by the ubiquitous *wizard* of hope. But honestly, orcs? Again with DOW? Didn’t they see where that got them last time? I hate boardgames about that stuff more than Tom Vasel hates Crocodile Pool Party. Posted by Ryan B. on Jan 16, 2009 at 05:03 PM | #

Ryan, I think you’re pinning too many hopes on one company to provide you with everything you need in a game. You might be part of the potential audience for a Days of Wonder game, but you’re not at the center of their Venn diagram of potential buyers. Branch out a bit, and consider games on their own merits rather than their publisher’s geneology. Pandemic seems like a mainstream title up your alley, something with a theme that you’d appreciate sharing with friends – yet at no time would I suggest you check out every Z-Man Games release. Eric, I own Pandemic. And the best thing about being a *fan* of a game company is that I can feel about them any way that I want. And I can also pin all my exasperated hopes on one game company. Isn’t the USA grand? Sorry dude, I’m a one trick pony. (See below) Go Arizona Cardinals! (loyal fan for 34 years; since I was six!) Posted by Ryan B. on Jan 16, 2009 at 09:42 PM | #

------ About your little Venn diagram crack: I poll my friends about a lot of this “theme” stuff for my own edification. None of them follow the game scene at all.... but all enjoy the invite to come over hang out and play some boardgames when I invite them. But I believe strongly they represent the mainstream opinion on games. So I consider that I am a conduit for expressing *their* opinion too… even though I share that exact same opinion. So Orcs, Wizards and Dwarves? No. No. NO. and NO! But you know what? At the end of the day, it’s the business financials that are the opinion that DOW should rightly listen to. Certainly not mine. And so if Wizards and Orcs and their ilk sells billions & jillions of copies and Ticket to Ride sells jack squat by comparison, then that is a story they should be listening to. Not my story. And if that is the case, my opinion is absolutely irrelevant. P.S. In the meantime, I don’t branch out my games. Or my publisher geneology. I DO branch out my life, however. But when it comes to games and DOW… well, I ain’t changin. And so I continue to beat the dead Orc. (LOL) Cheers, A slightly combative & unamused Ryan B.
