Dale Yu: Essen 2008 Pre-report and on bit of breaking news from Essen

Well, assuming that everything has gone according to plans made (earlier this month)—I’ve had a good trip thus far to Germany.  However, I am not planning to have much Internet access while on my trip, so I’m predicting how my trip has been thus far.

I’m hoping that my flight was uneventful and that I made it to Dusseldorf safely.

Cologne was likely beautiful and I had a great opportunity to re-explore the city and its wonderful architecture.
It was probably a bit chilly, and hopefully it didn’t rain too much while I was there.

I really hope that the tickets that I bought for the football match were appropriately held for me at Will Call, and I hope that 1. FC Köln managed to win a great game against Energie Cottbus.
I’ll predict a score of 3:1 to the home side.

I think I would have also really enjoyed my first chance to try the local beer, Kolsch, straight from the tap.  I’ll also have enjoyed a few pints of Schloesser Alt as well by now.
As far as the food goes, I’d estimate that I’ve had at least 85 different sausages in the 6 days that I’ve been here thus far ;)

After that, it’s a nice trip to my friend Henning’s house where we played lots of games, toured his local town and maybe took a day trip to Münster.

But, by this time, I’ll be safely in my hotel in Essen.  I’ll have met up with Melissa and other friends that I’ve only known via email before.
Much beer and games will have been enjoyed and I’ll be ready to hit the fair bright and early tomorrow morning.

Until you next appointment,
The Gaming Doctor

BREAKING NEWS
I predict that on Wednesday morning, it will be announced that FRED Distribution will have the distribution rights for Age of Steam.  I have been told on good authority that Mr. Bohrer will have a press conference sometime Weds. morning here in Essen telling the public of this news.  If it can be confirmed, I’m sure that our fearless leader, Eric Martin, will have a more official piece on this in the news section.

I don’t read German, but it looks like 1. FC Köln came out ahead 1:0.

I almost thought it would go through Queen since Wabash did.

If it had it would mean Rio Grande distribution here in the states; a huge move (not to belittle FRED)

Dave’s first comment above and the response to the news on BGG ( http://www.boardgamegeek.com/thread/349471 ) should help clarify for some readers and contributers that what gets published here is often taken unquestioningly and at face value, even when it’s published in the columnists’ section and not as ‘hard news,’ and even when, as far as I can tell, the entire piece is supposed to be funny.

Well, Ben, if that’s Dale’s idea of a joke, then I’d say the fault lies totally with him.  But I took his “breaking news” at face value.  He says his addendum was written 9 days after the main article and mentions very specific individuals and companies.  I see no reason not to believe this is actual news.  His use of the word “predict” might have been a bit unfortunate, given the nature of the article, but I’m pretty sure that was just a slip of the tongue.  Come tomorrow, I guess we’ll know.

I will say, though, if this is indeed accurate, that Dale probably should have let Eric release this, to eliminate any chance of confusion.

larry and ben,
it’s not a joke as far as I can tell but a good prediction.  it is labeled a prediction as it was/is not 100% confirmed at the time of my column.

and since that time, i have seen the actual pre-production prototype of the FRED AoS board and it looks fantastic… you do not even need a sticker for detroit!

and though this column isn’t meant to be news, I could simply not write about anything that i see here, and i will pass that along to the rest of the columnists here.  perhaps these reports from Essen will be much more proper then from your respective pedestals.

Dale says:

“perhaps these reports from Essen will be much more proper then from your respective pedestals.”

That was uncalled for wasn’t it? Or is this another joke?

Oof!  Last week we were treated to a public essay by Dale to his friends on why they should not ask him to bring stuff back from Essen.  This week, he’s told us about things which might happen at Essen.

Dale, when you have something to say, it can be very interesting.  But if you have nothing to say, you serve your reputation better by just saying nothing.
