Dale Yu: MBR Not Found
Well, this has been a most interesting week for me. One day, everything is peachy—then suddenly, my laptop’s hard drive starts to make an awful noise and I get to see my old friend, TBSOD.
I reboot the computer only to be greeted by a new message: “MBR not found”. It’s been a while since I’ve had a failure on this proportion—especially since my last backup was a little over three months ago—and needless to say, it’s been keeping me busy all week trying to figure out what to do about it.
Anyways, I did have a great column written up for this week (with pictures no less), but it is currently in hard-drive purgatory. Along with about 60GB of other data of varied importance.
We’ll see how my data-retrieval skills are—and if I get the column back, you’ll likely get to read it next week. In the meantime, I’m off to the store to get either a new HD or a new laptop.
Dale

Use a boot CD like Knoppix (http://www.knopper.net/knoppix/index-en.html) to access the needed files and transfer them to an other PC. Good luck! Posted by Surya Van Lierde on Aug 1, 2007 at 03:19 AM | #

Ubuntu may be a friendlier option these days, as it tends to have support for quite a few drivers---particularly for laptops. It’s nice to have the wireless card that’s not supported by most linuxes by default to work. Posted by Ava Jarvis on Aug 1, 2007 at 09:57 AM | #
