Days of Steam, Coming from StrataMax Games at Spiel 08

StrataMax Games will release a new title at Spiel 08 from designer Aaron Lauster called Days of Steam. While the name might sound familiar and the release is a train game, StrataMax’s Max Michael says that the game play stands apart from other titles.

In Days of Steam, the board starts with a single town in the center of the board. Players then take turns either laying a single square tile on the board or moving their train to pick up and deliver goods. Says Michael, “Of course it’s not that easy as your opponents have several ways to interfere with your plans such as playing hill tiles that slow trains along your budding network.”

The game will be available in a limited edition of 500 copies with a “proper box, professional art, full-color printing,” says Michael, which is a change from the plain white box of other Stratamax releases. No preorders or reservations will be available, so if the game sounds interesting, show up during the first days of the show!

While I could somewhat appreciate the charm of the production qualities of their games, I never saw the benefit of having such components. A lot of people are put off by it, even if the game is really good. So putting game mechanics first, as StrataMax has always claimed to do, is very noble, but that shouldn’t mean lacklustre components, as there are more than enough games that are both very good games and pleasing to the eye. That’s why I applaud this move to better production values.
