Death Note Card Game Coming from Trofé
I’m a slobbering fanboi of few things these days, having hit the advanced age of forty and becoming a jaded old fart, but I will confess to going ga-ga over Death Note, a manga series by Tsugumi Ohba and Takeshi Obata that features a genius 17-year-old named Light Yagami who discovers the notebook of a Shinigami – a death god – and discovers that he can kill people by writing their names in the notebook. At the end of each book in the twelve volume series I kept wondering where the story could possibly go next, and I was constantly surprised and thrilled by more twists and turns than I ever could have imagined. So, so good.
New publisher Trofé is releasing a Death Note card game from designer Giacomo Santopietro in early May. The game is for 4-8 players, ages 14 and up, with a playing time of 30 minutes and a retail price of €12.90. Players are trying to identify which character possesses the death note, and the rules include both a basic and advanced version. Stefano Castelli has posted the front and back cover on Deck & Board and promises a preview of the game in the weeks to come.
While the game will include English rules in addition to the Italian, there’s no word on whether the game will be distributed outside of Italy. You can be sure that I’ll follow up on this one, so stay tuned for more details.

I confess I was wondering when someone would design a game for this. The tension of the series should translate well into a game. Posted by Tiago Nunes on Apr 18, 2009 at 05:57 AM | #

I’m a slobbering fanboi of Death Note too. I can’t wait! Actually, I can… I’m too fat and slow to be physically excited :-). But that should be great - I hope the original artist does the art. Posted by John Farrell on Apr 20, 2009 at 01:51 AM | #

Well, consider that the whole development process has been followed step by step by the original japanese publisher. Talking with one of Trofé founders I understood that they have been quite stict in terms on contents, so you should expects something really close to the manga/anime. Do you have to hold the cards on the top corners between 2 fingers, and eat lots of cake while playing? Posted by Jim Cote on Apr 21, 2009 at 10:20 PM | #

I am currently on the 6th book and loving it. I really enjoyed the cat and mouse between Light and L and have been very surprised where the book has gone so far. Can’t wait to see what happens next. I look forward to checking out the card game, could be very cool. Wonder if it will have Apples in it? Posted by Raymond J. Dennis Jr. on Apr 22, 2009 at 08:16 AM | #
