Drei, Coming from Puzzlewood at Spiel 08

Bruce Whitehill writes about games under the handle of The Big Game Hunter, but he has also designed a game or two, such as the 2008 release Change Horses from eggertspiele and Rio Grande. Whitehill has a new game due out at Spiel 08 in October from Puzzlewood, a three-player-only perfect information game called Drei.

In Drei, each pair of players shares a gameboard, and each player has nine pieces in three heights and three shapes. After taking turns to place pieces on the starting ends of their gameboards, players take turns moving one piece at a time, trying to either capture an opponent’s piece or move a piece to the opponent’s starting line. You can move on only one board at a time, so you have to choose your battles carefully. The game ends once no more captures are possible, and the player with the most points (based on captures and board-crossing) wins.
