Edwin Wong: Final Run-Up To GAMECON-1 Malaysia!

This week, enthusiastic volunteers from no less than 4 countries, are making their final preparations for this weekend’s GAMECON-1 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia!

As Tom Vasel (Korea) puts the final touches to his paper, “Using Board Games in Education”, Andreas Wein & Colin Lim (Singapore) are holding their final briefing tonight at Settlers Cafe for their 12-gamer strong group. Meanwhile, Dale Walton (Thailand) is shortlisting 5 Mensa Select nominees/winners from his Pin series to be showcased under the Mensa Select Challenge, as the rest of us in Malaysia try to live up to the waves being created by the official website (www.gamecon1.com)…

As complete details of the event can be found on the site, I am focusing this report on the supporting events which we believe will drive a significant amount of traffic to the convention, and provide great value & entertainment for gamers!

On Saturday, right after the press conference, Tom Vasel will deliver his workshop, which we expect will be packed to the brim, as massive interest is being shown by teachers, parents and educators.

In the afternoon, Malaysia’s most successful recording artist, KRU, will be performing a mini-showcase - this itself is guaranteed to “pack the house”! The group will then be joining “the last defense of humanity”, one of the event highlights, where they will take command of a squad of Space Marines and face-off against never ending hordes of alien invaders!

Later in the evening, visitors will get to meet Team A1 Malaysia, where ex-Formula1 driver, Alex Yoong, and Formula 3000 driver, Fairuz Fauzy, will launch the official Team A1 Malaysia board game, “Pride of the Nation”! Fresh from their 5th place finish at the Sepang International Circuit, hundreds are expected to show up to meet them and cheer them onto their first podium finish in the next race.

On Sunday, Dragon Red, one of the country’s top indie rock groups with a huge college following, will be launching their latest album, and at the same time, launch the hugely successful musiccanteen.com christmas album. If you want your christmas this year to rock, check out this awesome christmas album at www.musiccanteen.com ! The highlight will surely be the “last defense” battling to the tune of their out-of-this-world, “Rudolph Red”!

Visitors would also get a chance to “be in the movies” with their favorite sci-fi & fantasy heroes, with some help from a giant blue screen! Not into sci-fi & fantasy? How about Pikachu instead?

At the end of it all, we hope that GAMECON-1 will not be just “a game convention”, but a great way for family, friends and colleagues to spend a weekend!
