Edwin Wong: MALAYSIAN Representatives For Settlers International Finals Decided!
Today saw the 1st Malaysian Settlers of Catan finals, kicking-off at Starbucks (1Utama, Old Wing) at 200pm sharp, before a strong media turn-out.
Fate certainly played a big role in determining one of the two Malaysian representatives for the 2006 Settlers of Catan International finals!
For Kok Keong, who emerged second after sudden death in the tense finals, it was fate showing a kind hand several times over - Firstly, despite being a regular participant in almost all the qualifiers, he failed secure an automatic place in today’s finals. Secondly, two finalists were unable to attend today’s finals. Thirdly, as only two out of six invited to the stand-by pool turned up (KK being one of the two), both automatically earned the precious opportunity to play in the finals. Finally, after battling his way into the grand finals, fate dealt its final kind hand - As Ryan secured the 10th victory point, KK and Andy were tied. Play then passed to Andy, BUT HE COULD NOT SECURE THE TIE BREAKER POINT! This allowed play to eventually pass to KK who shook hands with fate!
So there it is - a dramatic end to a highly successful tournament that attracted 92 participants in 7 qualifiers over 7 months. Well done to all the 16 finalists! Congratulations to Ryan and KK, and a small consolation to Andy and Ainul in the form of a special edition, not-for-sale Settlers expansion released by Klaus Teuber.
And thanks once again to all our venue hosts/sponsors: Games Circle, Toybox, Boardgamescafe.net, Starbucks and PanGlobal.
