End of the Line for Franz-Benno Delonge

Franz-Benno Delonge, designer of Hellas, Dos Rios, and Manila, died Sunday, September 2, 2007 as a result of cancer. Delonge’s first published title was Big City, which appeared from Goldsieber in 1999 and is due out in a new edition from Valley Games within the next 12 months. His most famous design was TransAmerica, which was one of three titles in the running for Spiel des Jahres 2002. Container, his most recent creation, is due to be released at Spiel 07.

You can read more about Delonge in this 2004 interview by Dave Shapiro and this 2005 interview by Tom Vasel.

Wow… I’m stunned.  He was one of my favorite designers.  My heart goes out to his family.

Oh man, that’s really sad!
I liked some of his designs a lot, and even played Container with him last Essen. A really very kind guy. I miss him already, I was looking forward to meeting him again this year.
A sad day for the board game world!

This is a real shocker; I had no idea he was even ill.  I always enjoyed corresponding with Benno on the Geek and in the user groups.  He will certainly be missed.

For the most part, the world of modern boardgaming seems to be blessed with a minimum of personal tragedies.  I remember noting in 2001 that just about every notable designer was still alive, many of them at an advanced age.  Since then, we’ve lost Sid Sackson and Alex Randolph (both in their eighties), and then Paul Randles and Dave Farquhar (both too young).  Now, Benno is gone.  Given the large number of folks in the hobby, that still isn’t many, but time is beginning to have its inexorible effect.  And it still hurts to lose one of our own, particularly someone as young as Benno.

The world of gaming is a little sadder today.

Somehow, the line “Like what you just read?” feels a bit misplaced under an article like this…

Hmm, I see what you mean Lajos, but lots of bits and pieces of the site are automated, and I can’t turn them off and on selectively. It’s hard to imagine an approach or statement that would work after every single post on BGN.

Maybe change it to “If you appreciate what you just read...”?

Wow. This is a sad time. My condolences to his family and friends.
