Fantasy Flight Launches “Living Card Games”

Fantasy Flight Games is switching its A Game of Thrones and Call of Cthulhu collectible card games (CCG) over to a new, non-collectible format that it’s dubbed the Living Card Game (LCG).

“We wanted to try something different,” says FFG’s Jeremy Stomberg. A couple of years ago, Fantasy Flight introduced Asylum Packs for the Cthulhu CCG, fixed packs of forty cards that eliminated the slot machine format of normal CCG booster packs. “A Game of Thrones is one of the longest lasting CCGs that’s still being produced, and we want to make sure that it continues for a long time. With three books remaining to be published and the possibility of a mini-series on HBO, we want to have a reasonable place for newcomers to start playing the game.”

The LCG format consists of starter boxes and chapter packs. Each chapter pack will include forty cards: single copies of ten cards, and three copies each of ten different cards. The first chapter packs for AGoT will be released in February 2008, and a new chapter pack, retailing for $9.95, will be released each month. “There’s a single printing for each of the chapter packs,” says Stomberg, “so when they’re gone, they’re gone. We’re printing all six months’ worth at the same time, then releasing them month by month.”

The starter box for AgoT will retail for $39.95 and include a gameboard, plastic bits, and “a pile of cards,” says Stomberg. The exact number of cards, along with the percentage of new and reprinted cards, is still being determined. “We’re making sure that we have a good mix of stuff so that people can play the house they like and have a bunch of different ways to get started as opposed to everyone having the same deck.” The first AGoT starter box will be released August 2008 at Gen Con.

Two more Asylum Packs will be released for Call of Cthulhu, followed by a starter box in October 2008 and new monthly Asylum packs.

Cleverly evil!  It’s like a limited edition take on Blue Moon.  This will really bite for the people who get into it later, though....
