Formula D Debuts/Returns in November
Shorter equals faster, right? That might be the reasoning behind the naming of Formula D, the new version of Formula Dé that’s being released by Asmodée Editions in October 2008 in Europe and in November in the U.S. Based on the description from Asmodée, the game offers the racing of earlier editions, but has been souped up with extra features:
Formula D is also the excitement of illegal racing in the streets of big cities - anything goes: custom cars, nitro acceleration, drifting in the curves, dirty tricks… The game mechanics stay the same, but use specific rules, cars and tracks.

Customized drivers are another element that’s new to the Formula D system. The kicker, of course, will be the tracks themselves and whether they’ll be interchangeable with those from earlier days. More details on that are still to come…
This game has been updated on Gone Cardboard.

Noooooooooo! I was waiting for the re-release because it looked so cool… but I despise everything to do with the street-racer theme. Never will buy it now, unless used. *sigh* Posted by John Holder on Aug 7, 2008 at 11:21 AM | #

Yeah, maybe Asmodee was unaware of the fatalities caused by street races recently in the U.S. Maybe not the most appropriate theme at this time. Posted by Larry Levy on Aug 7, 2008 at 11:50 AM | #

Drifting makes me think about anime series Initial D. Perhaps that’s where the D comes from ;-) Posted by Markku Jaatinen on Aug 7, 2008 at 01:31 PM | #

The box cover looks promising, and the addition of drivers sounds great. But one of the drivers is an anime looking chick with wolf ears? I think I’ll pass. Posted by Chad Krizan on Aug 7, 2008 at 10:09 PM | #

Cartoony and changing to street racing? Wow, how much more can they mess up this great game? Posted by Ryan Olson on Aug 7, 2008 at 10:57 PM | #

It definitely looks like they’re going for a younger demographic. Posted by Larry Levy on Aug 7, 2008 at 11:58 PM | #

Obviously they are going for the Need for Speed crowd with this. I am actually quiet excited about this. Would it have been a straight reprint, I wouldn’t have bothered looking at it, because the original game and about 30 race tracks are sitting in my collection (half of them never played). But with the new theme, the anime looks and the rule gimmicks this is a whole new game. Less puristic than Formula De, probably not living up to the former standards (though we will have to see about that) but for me it looks like Formula De’s fun, lighthearted and casual little brother. Seems like they tried fixing something that didn’t need fixing. I’m all for better artwork though! Posted by Surya Van Lierde on Aug 8, 2008 at 02:43 AM | #

Concerning the title: The original edition was called “Formula D”, The “e” was added for the Eurogameversion. Asmodee is just going retro.

Man oh man am I glad I have the original...then again this one might turn out better than it looks, it’s just that I’m not sure what the anime inspired look is supposed to add… Posted by Dave Kudzma on Aug 8, 2008 at 11:53 AM | #

That card looks like a cross between the old cartoons Josie and the Pussy Cats and The Wacky Races. I’m not entirely sure that is a good thing… Posted by Fraser McHarg on Aug 11, 2008 at 01:49 AM | #

"I’m not sure what the anime inspired look is supposed to add… “ Asmodee is a French company. If you look into French comics, you will instantly see that this look is wildly popular in France and I guess they hope to sell more copies that way. I never was a fan of the original artwork. This artwork is cleaner, which is better, but I’m not to sure about the changes either. Posted by Surya Van Lierde on Aug 11, 2008 at 03:21 AM | #

Thanks for the info Surya. Sometimes it’s easy to forget the cultural impact on boardgames. Take 4F (Funny Friends by Friedemann Friese): Much of the game’s cards were reworked when translated for the American market; just because many of the ideas were so Euro-centric. I had no idea that this look was popular in France...it’s a wonder Bruno hasn’t chimed in on this change; I’ll be interested to hear what he has to say :) Posted by Dave Kudzma on Aug 11, 2008 at 08:20 AM | #

Hi I know this is late (I’ve just joined)but I’d like to add my bit to this discussion. If you read the description to the game, it is about Formula One racing. Asmodee has also added the Street Racing element to give it some variety for those who want it, not everyone likes F1. Remember that it is just a game and considering the remake of films like Deathrace 2000, there are a lot of people out there for whom the street racing theme is popular. As to the title, the original was Formula Dé (with an accent over the E). Dé is French for dice, so the title translation would have been “Formula Dice”, but being English/English speaking we ignored the accent and pronounced it as Dee. It would appear that Asmodee have just adopted the popular pronunciation. Alex Posted by Alex Elstone on Nov 10, 2008 at 07:40 AM | #

I admit it, I thought it looked crap and then Melissa sent this photo back from Essen and now I want one or want Asmodee to release a kit for Formula Dé owners! http://www.boardgamegeek.com/image/386194 Posted by Fraser McHarg on Nov 10, 2008 at 08:11 AM | #
