Fraser McHarg: Losses and wins with Daughter the Elder
Yesterday Daughter the Elder told Melissa “Mum, I win the grown-up games against Dad, but lose the kids games”.
Thinking about recent games, she is pretty much correct!
We have played Mystery Rummy: Jekyll and Hyde a few times since we got it earlier this month and I am still without a win. We’ve play quite a bit of Mystery Rummy: Jack the Ripper this year, I am not without victory, but I don’t think I am necessarily holding my end up.
Last weekend we played Rummikub (which I found out later she plays at school) and a couple of games of Plus and Minus. I lost them all.
We also played Igloo Pop with Daughter the Younger and we were completely rolled by Daughter the Elder. I am not sure if she actually considers this a kids game or an adults game, I would tend towards the latter, unless playing with nine year old hustlers.
Other games that she has commonly requested are Spy Alley, Dawn Under and Stock Market Game. I presume these are the ones she considers kids games, as they are the ones where I not only hold my own, but most win [barely suppresses the urge for a maniacal laugh].
She often requests Agricola, but thanks to someone being so busy with translations it hasn’t actually hit the table since we got back from the beach in January (side note, why is now hotter in Melbourne than it was in January?). Presumably this must be a kids game, because although she plays quite competently, she is not yet scoring in the same league as her parents and parent’s friends.
The last time we played a decent number of games of Connect Four I was happy to hold her to a 50% win ratio, so this is presumably an inbetweener game.
If you’re interested you can see some of the games she has liked over the years at this GeekList

Well, I didn’t help. She beat me in every game of To Court the King that we played! Give my best to her (and all your family). Posted by Tom Lehmann on Mar 19, 2008 at 08:11 PM | #

Well that means it must be a grown-up’s game Tom :-) Posted by Fraser McHarg on Mar 19, 2008 at 09:10 PM | #
