Fraser McHarg: Spiel 09 - Press Day
Press Day, aka Setup Day Two.
Another brief report snatching computer time before breakfast.
I skipped the official press conference as it was in German and my official translator was in attendance.
I did take a quick cruise through the new games section which is where all the new games are shown off with their designers etc. immediately after the press conference. Lots of games and lots of people. Lots of people in costume too. The vampire family and the opera singers were good. The Halli Galli girls in Carmen Mirandaeque outfits were good too, but nobody I have talked to can relate them to the game other than there are fruit on the cards. The Lamont brothers had their kilts, they saved the Ostrich costumes for later.
A lot of stands were still setting up or had yet to arrive, which Melissa tells me is different from last year.
We took a look through some of the second hand stalls were I grabbed Amigo RoboRally and Crash and Burn. I also picked up a couple of our pre-orders including the metal meeples, which are very cute.
The BGG^H^H^H Geekdo.com stand was being set up and Daughter the Younger and Daughter the Elder assisted the sticker crew putting stickers on the Geekdo cards to be used for voting during the Spiel. Later on some people not at Spiel may have noticed Daughter the Younger having just a bit too much fun with the webcam and the video streaming. Any dentists that were watching may offer comment here :-)
I fulfilled my Power Grid completist urge by getting all of Friedemann’s new stuff and spotted a few other things to follow-up on over the next few days (although experienced Spiel goers would say I should have already done that!).
You can upgrade to Imperial 2030 with the upgrade kit or buy the whole game. Buying the whole game does give you some cool new ship pieces. I will admit to being tempted just a little, but did manage to resist and walk away with just the upgrade kit.
Has anyone ever mentioned that the Spiel is big? Really quite large? I mean you may think it is a long way down to the chemist…
Day: 2
Games: 10 (including expansions)
Beers: 2 (Stauder)

Thanks for the quick update. Have fun with everything… So, by being Power Grid completist, do you already have Megawatts and the EnBW edition? I have been sort of a completist, in that I have been supplying a friend with the expansions as they are released, but I don’t actually own the game myself. I’ve been thinking about getting Megawatts (which he does not have yet), just so that I have a copy of the game to play when he forgets to bring it to game nights… I would also be curious to hear what you think of Factory Manager. That is certainly high on the “domestic buy” half of my Essen want list… Posted by David Reed on Oct 22, 2009 at 11:10 AM | #

David, yes I do. EnBW last year and picked up Megawatt during a trip to Paris in September. Lukasz, ah yes I always try and do my bit to keep the ^H stuff alive, it takes me back to my uni days :-) Posted by Fraser McHarg on Oct 22, 2009 at 05:43 PM | #
