From the Editor: Games for Soldiers Drive 2009
For the fourth year in a row, I’m organizing a “games for soldiers” drive in which I’ll collect games or monetary donations, then purchase games and ship them at my expense to U.S. soldiers serving in Iraq and Afghanistan. Yes, I realize that I’m starting this drive later than in previous years and the games will not reach their recipients until 2010, but as the old elementary school joke goes: better Nate than lever.
Thought Hammer has already donated $400 toward this year’s drive, funds collected during Midnight Madness drawings at BGG.CON – the BoardGameGeek convention – in November 2009. As I did in 2008, I’ll donate $10 of any $25 member sign-up or renewal during the drive toward the fund; the entirety of any funds donated will go towards the drive. Myriad Games, my awesome local game store, is once again handling the logistics of the game order and will kick in freebies on top of the order. (Disclosure: Myriad Games has purchased advertising on BGN, but would be awesome whether or not it advertised.)
All funds must be received by noon U.S. eastern time (GMT -5) on Monday, December 21, 2009. If you want to donate games directly, please email me and I’ll send you my address. The packages likely won’t be shipped until the start of January 2010, so there should be enough time for the USPS to do its thing. To check out the results of the 2008 drive, head to my Dec. 20, 2008 column, which incudes a picture of all the games.
