From the Editor: New BGN Columnist…
...although his first posting won’t be until about, oh, 2016.

My wife Linda and I are adopting Traver Maxwell, who was born on Friday, January 2, 2009 to a birthmom in Arizona, and we get to meet the little tyke for the first time in a couple of days. (Psst – anyone who hosts gaming in Phoenix, please drop me a line as I can probably sneak away from the hotel for a few hours.)
I’ll be paying much closer attention to games directed at the younger crowd in the years to come. Thanks to all who have recently renewed or signed up as BGN members – your unintentional baby shower presents are much appreciated. I have news items, a preview and a review scheduled for the next few days, but will otherwise be occupied for the next week or so as I learn how to play games one-handed while holding an infant in the other…

Congrats, Eric! I would’ve recommended twins. Four player games are easier than three. ;) Posted by Larry Chong on Jan 5, 2009 at 09:47 PM | #

That is awesome. “(Psst – anyone who hosts gaming in Phoenix, please drop me a line as I can probably sneak away from the hotel for a few hours.) “ W. Eric, I am totally socially inept, but even I think this is a bad idea on so many levels. Hugs, MC Posted by Mark Crane on Jan 5, 2009 at 10:53 PM | #

And here we are thinking that everything is just plain old normal on the other side of the BGN screen. I’ll add that you have a child with an exceptional birthday which is shared with Isaac Asimov and at least one other genius. Posted by Jonathan Degann on Jan 5, 2009 at 11:47 PM | #

Congratulations Eric! That’s wonderful. And at 7 years old, Traver will probably be the youngest BGN columnist ever. Larry - No worries, he’ll just get to play San Marco A LOT! :) Posted by Tom Rosen on Jan 6, 2009 at 12:27 AM | #

Huzzah! Plan on being much sleepier than usual for quite some time. Be sure to pick up a copy of Go Away Monster sometime in the next two years. The parental advice now endeth. Posted by Jeffrey D Myers on Jan 6, 2009 at 12:30 AM | #

"I would’ve recommended twins. Four player games are easier than three.” Nonsense! Wallace is putting out a new three-player game every year. Start stockpiling now! Congratulations, Eric. Posted by Larry Levy on Jan 6, 2009 at 01:25 AM | #

I too, recently have been jumped feet first into parenthood. My wife is a wreck - barely time to test a quick mechanism in a prototype for me while the baby is asleep...rarely I might add. Her favorite boardgame is Roads and Boats, and for the time allotted on that game, it won’t be hitting the table for some time.

Congratulations Eric and don’t worry ... as most of the gamers you will learn how to read rules with a kid sleeping in your arms, or just how to use meeples and bits with a 2 years old kid. Finally you will learn that the best way to preserve your boxes from destruction is to teach as soon as you can games to your kid ... and, of course, you know that some pieces (hopefully the smallest ones) will end down in the baby’s mouth ...
good play and happy time to you and Linda

Congrats! In my experience, you’ll still have some good gaming for awhile, then he’ll hit an age (1 o 2) where it gets pretty hard to game with him around due to his “help” for awhile… :) Glad to hear of another gamer come into the world. Posted by Matt J. Carlson on Jan 6, 2009 at 01:45 PM | #

Eric: Congratulations! And a bit of advice: It’s not too early to start moving your more valuable games to higher shelves. I turned my back for only a few minutes when my kids were preschoolers and found them gleefully opening a bottom shelf full of boxes, turning them each upside down, and whipping up the contents into a shower of mixed game components. What happened in 10 minutes took a couple hours to sort out. Posted by Bob Scherer-Hoock on Jan 6, 2009 at 11:34 PM | #
