From the Editor: Pop-Up Pieces & Notes from Soldiers
Two items on today’s agenda:
1. I’ve switched Board 2 Pieces to a JavaScript-based pop-up format. After playing with CSS for a few hours, I couldn’t achieve the hover effect that I wanted – everything seemed to be in place, but nothing hovered – so I went with this instead. If anyone knows CSS and wants to lend a hand, write me. Write also if the pop-up doesn’t work for you.
2. A few of the soldiers who received games in the second annual Games for Soldiers drive have sent notes of thanks that I wanted to pass on:
| “Thank you so much for the board games. My men and I are truly getting spoiled by all of you back home. God bless and take care!”
“Hello and God bless. I just wanted to take the time to thank you for your support of my fellow soldiers and me by sending us the games that you did. Games like the ones you sent us help pass the time. Individuals such as yourself help make our job over here easier.” |
Since U.S. soldiers will be in Iraq until at least the November 2008 election, I’m sure they’d appreciate more games to keep them from going stir crazy. The link above has details about how you can donate.

The Boards2Pieces change is rather annoying for RSS readers that don’t support all the new Javascript. Posted by J C Lawrence on Mar 18, 2008 at 10:16 AM | #

Hmm, I’ll have to look into that. Hadn’t considered the feed… Eric Posted by W. Eric Martin on Mar 18, 2008 at 10:25 AM | #

That explains why I couldn’t get it to pop up today. I couldn’t even get it to pop up from the main page - I had to look at the source and grab the link. I use Safari 3.0.4 on Mac OS X 10.5.2, and use Google reader for my feed. Posted by Timothy Hunt on Mar 18, 2008 at 11:33 AM | #

it seems to be broken in IE 7. I get javascript errors now. Posted by Lee Fisher on Mar 18, 2008 at 11:49 AM | #

All right, back to the basics for now. It works on my (old) Safari and (old) OS X, but better to keep it simple until I test this more. Eric Posted by W. Eric Martin on Mar 18, 2008 at 12:25 PM | #

I hovered over the board 2 pieces at the top of the page and it does not hover. I am using IE7. Posted by Terry Bailey Sr. on Mar 19, 2008 at 06:56 AM | #

Terry, the editor’e note mentioned that the hover effect wasn’t working, so you’re not alone. I removed the pop-up JavaScript as well since that wasn’t working either. For now, as in the past, you have to click on the strip to read it. Eric Posted by W. Eric Martin on Mar 19, 2008 at 07:39 AM | #
