From the Editor: Pre-Spiel Notes for 2008

A few items to tick off in the remaining days before Spiel 08 opens in Essen, Germany:

• Tom Rosen is joining Boardgame News as a columnist on Tuesdays opposite Fraser McHarg. Over the past few months I’ve reprinted a trio of articles from Tom, and tomorrow, October 21, will see his first new column for BGN. Glad to have you aboard, Tom!

• I had previously mentioned creating a smaller, downloadable version of Boardgame News’ super, mega-colossal Spiel preview, one that would remove the images and descriptions in order to create a more compact checklist-style organizing tool for those attending Spiel – but given that Spielbox already creates a Spiel 08 checklist, spending hours recreating that list would be pointless.

If you want a checklist for Spiel, go to Spielbox and take advantage of Knut-Michael Wolf’s work. If you want all the details on hundreds of games with images, descriptions and (when possible) designer notes and mini-reviews, then print out the BGN Spiel preview and devote a binder to it. Note that when you print out the preview, the left- and right-hand columns normally seen on BGN will not print.

• I still have a few more game previews/reviews to post in the next couple of days, and not doing that checklist will give me time to write and publish these before Spiel opens.

• My current plan is to post updates from Spiel 08 – reports on new games, info on forthcoming titles, etc. – whenever the chance arrives, but since the press room lacks wireless coverage (or at least it did in 2007 and earlier years), it’s hard to predict when I’ll be able to post.

• If you’re going to Spiel and spot some guy wearing a BGN business card in the press badge holder around his neck, stop me and say hi!

Thanks for all your labors, Eric.  It’s become impossible to imagine dealing with Essen without your guide.  Information overload never felt so good.

And welcome aboard, Tom!  Great to have you on the team.

I hope to see you there Eric. And I would love to hear the latest inside news about obscure, but great games, I otherwise would have missed!

Eric, your hard work has made my order from Essen much easier.

By the way, my printer has the ability to make booklets (four pages to a page, collated into a properly-formatted folded book) - it makes for a handy way of looking through everything. If people can read the resulting small print and have a printer with similar capabilities, I strongly recommend doing things this way.

Good luck Eric and thank you for your massive coverage. I hope next year I’ll be able to come in Essen again and help you in making the BGN report.
