From the Editor: Retirement and a New Editor

As you may have noticed, my output on Boardgame News has been minimal since I got back from Essen.  When I got back I was exhausted, and I also wanted to take some time to figure out whether or not I wanted to continue with the site.  I have come to the decision I’m going to retire from the game news business.

Why?  Well, there are quite a few reasons.  One major one is that I’ve been doing it for almost five years now and I feel I’ve done everything that I can do on the boardgaming news front.  There are a number of personal reasons as well.

Note that this is different from my decision to leave Gamefest.  With Gamefest I was dissatisfied with Gamefest itself, but still keen on doing the job.  With this I’ve decided to leave the job altogether.

What does this mean for Boardgame News?  Well, much to my surprise and delight, someone has stepped forward and volunteered to take over the reins of the site and that someone is Eric Martin. This is great news - I didn’t want the site to disappear and Eric is eminently qualified to take over.  I will be handing over everything to Eric today - Sunday, November 19th.

Personally, I will be relinquishing my weekly column and will now contribute as an ‘at large’ columnist.  I may do some other things, but that will be up to the discretion of the new editor.

The site would not have been as good as it was without the contributions from others and I’d like to thank them all for their great work.  Much thanks also go to the subscribers and advertisers who supported the site.  I’d also like to thank the readers of Boardgame News for taking the time to check out the site.  It has been my great pleasure to do the site and I sincerely hope you continue to support Eric and the site in the future.

Many thanks, Rick, for all of your efforts over the past few years ... our trips to Essen have been made SO much easier by all of your hard work.

All the best for the future - you’ll be missed!

I was very happy to meet you last summer and wasn’t surprised to find out you were as interesting and sympathetic in person than over the Internet. From our interview (see below), I understood you were into the game reporting business for the long run, so I’m taken off balance by today’s announcement.

Your unique contribution will be missed. I’m sure Eric will keep BGN up to the high standards you’ve defined. I wish you all the best in your new endeavors.

Looking forward to meeting you again someday.

Rick -

You’ve made BGN into an a great resource for all of us addicted gamers. Eric is a great choice to continue on, and I look forward to continuing to hear from you in your new role. I was dreading the loss of BGN, as it’s role is unique among gaming sites, and Eric’s writing skill and talent should be just what is needed to keep BGN as my home page for some time to come.

I, for one, welcome our new ins--I mean Eric, of course.  Thanks, Rick, for all your great work!

Good luck with your future endeavers.  We appreciate what you’ve done with the site and hope that Eric can keep the site at the high level that you have.

Rick, thank you for your high-quality news, reviews, and commentary over the years. I’ve really enjoyed checking in on the Terminal City Gamers website, then the Gamefest Gamewire, then Boardgamenews almost every day. Best wishes for your endeavors.

I’m so glad that Eric M. is continuing the website!

Thanks for all you do, Rick. Your coverage of the hobby has cost me a lot of $$$ over the past couple of years. :-)

Money well spent, though. Thanks for helping to draw me in to the world of boardgaming.  I hope you will find success, fulfillment and fun in your ‘retirement’.

Eric, welcome aboard.  I think you’ll do a great job.

Rick, you’ve been a great contributor to my enjoyment of games, and BGN the catalyst.  You will be forever enshrined in the annals of gamedom.

Eric, I eagerly await your take on BGN, and wish you well on my site of most favored status.

Regards to both gents.

I have to join in the chorus of those who were shocked, dismayed, and saddened when reading of Rick’s departure. Fortunately, Rick was able to leave things in the capable hands of Eric.

Thanks, Rick. You always put out a well written product. If you find yourself in need of some decompresion in south Florida, feel free to look me up.

Eric, best of luck. Your writing has been excellent and I’m sure you will fill Rick’s shoes admirably.

Awww, I’ll miss Rick and his voice on my weekly Dice Tower. Now I regret not saying hi to him at Origins. But, then, I’m sure he hasn’t retired from games in general…

Best of luck, Eric! You have big shoes to fill!

That’s a shame, I respect Rick’s views on games more than anyone else, him and I seem to have the exact same taste in games.  I’ll genuinely really miss his writings.

When this site began and asked for $20 membership fees, I signed up not because of the site or the ability to comment, but because I wanted Rick to continue to write.  Let’s hope Eric can keep up the great work!

Thank you Rick for everything. Was really nice to work together and you was a great editor: I have learnt a lot of thing from you in this year. Good play and good luck for your future.

And also a big welcome to Eric. I will be happy to continue to give my help to BGN and I hope Eric will welcome my contribution. Welcome to the new “king”.

Play must go on!

Rick, thanks again for everything you’ve done---this site is a wonderful resource and the one I visit the most.

I know you won’t drop out entirely and I look forwards to seeing you at conventions where I can, and whatever you write in the future.

Have lots of fun---you’ve earned it!

Eric, I salute you as our new Fearless Leader.

Oh no! This is a shock! I’m going to miss all the news that you’re putting out, not to mention your weekly voice in The Dice Tower. All the best for your future, I’m just going to sulk in a corner for awhile ruminating on the boardgame community’s loss…

Thanks for all the great work Rick!  You’ve been a Geekbuddy of mine for quite a while now, and you’ve yet to steer me wrong. Hope to see your writing and commentary again soon!

Best wishes to Eric too!

Thanks, Rick, for your encouragement and enthusiasm this past year.  That will be missed.

I do, however, respect wholeheartedly your courage to step away from it--even if the site would not be able to continue without you.  There are, after all, bigger things in life than boardgames!

Rick,

Some public comment:  Really, truly you were a great editor to work for… and a great human being to work for as well.  More than anyone, you brought real class… to a hobby that is already classy.

We stand as a group, indebted.

Best of luck to you, Rick. Eric has big shoes to fill but I am sure he can handle it. I look forward to your future contributions to this great site that you have “fathered”. You will be missed.

I agree with all thankyous and goodlucks.

Allt the best to you Rick, and to you Eric. I hope I will continue to visit BGN very often.

I am grieved to see you depart, Rick, but understand that one must heed the call when it comes.  Thanks for everything you have done.  While you may not be here on a regular basis, I know our friendship will continue.
