Publisher: Days of Wonder
Designer: Richard Borg
Players: 2
Release Date: July & August/September 2007

The BattleLore game that Days of Wonder published at the end of 2006 came in a box 50% larger than was normal for the company. Little did gamers realize how large a case they’d actually need to hold the entire BattleLore system. Call to Arms and Epic BattleLore—opening the game up to team play and more customized troop deployment—were the game’s first expansions, and now four Specialist Packs are due to be released this summer, giving players many new options on the battlefield whether or not they use the previously released expansions.

The first Specialist Packs to be released in July are the Goblin Skirmishers and the Dwarven Battalion. The Skirmishers pack includes four new types of figures—8 Spear Bearers, 8 Slingers, 3 Drummers, and 1 Band Leader—along with Specialist cards for these figures, four new Weapon Summary cards, new banners, and a rules booklet with two new adventures. The Goblin Band emboldens its fellow Goblins, while the Slingers and Spear Bearers just want to break things.

The Dwarven Battalion Specialist Pack features three new figures—8 Spear Bearers, 8 Axe Swingers, and 4 Iron Dwarf Bagpipers, whose music creates fear in all within earshot. The pack also includes Specialist and Weapon Summary cards, along with 14 banners and a rules book with two new adventures.

The next two Specialist Packs are Goblin Marauders—perhaps to give the weak-spined goobers more of a fighting chance—and the Hundred Years’ War, and they should arrive before the end of September and possibly even in August.

The Hundred Years’ War pack highlights the specialized weaponry used during that conflict, specifically in the form of four new figure types: 4 Halberdiers, 4 Horn Blowers, 8 Spearmen, and 16 Arbalestiers. The pack also includes 14 banners and a rulebook with four new adventures and details on Medieval Lore.

Finally, appearing alongside the realistic Hundred Years’ War pack, there’s another go at the Goblins. The Goblin Marauders pack includes 1 Goblin Band Leader and 3 Goblin Drummers for a fantasy-tinged battle of the bands, along with 6 Hobgoblin Hyena Riders and 6 Hobgoblin Ostrich Riders. New banners, Specialist cards, Weapon Summary cards, and a rulebook with two new adventures round out the package.
