That seems like an unusually excellent list for GAMES magazine. Great picks! Posted by Matthew Monin on Oct 12, 2006 at 02:16 AM | #

I goofed—Games Magazine actually calls Vegas Showdown its Game of the Year for 2007, and the entire list is the Buyer’s Guide to Games 2007. Posted by W. Eric Martin on Oct 12, 2006 at 03:03 AM | #

A bit ironic since by 2007 Vegas Showdown will be unavailable. It is now out of print and AH is clearing their remaining inventory at 50% off. Nevertheless I think this was a respectable choice, Vegas Showdown has been a big hit for me and my game group. It’s not as heavy as Caylus which makes it a bit more accessible, has a more “Americanized” theme, and is pretty fun. It’s too bad a lot of gamers shied away from it because of the big “AH” on the front of the box. Posted by Mike Pennisi on Oct 12, 2006 at 06:15 AM | #

Games Magazine has done quite a good job with their last few Games of the Year and this is no exception. Vegas Showdown is a very good pick based on their readership and its excellent theme should provide a nice introduction to some classic German-style mechanics for a lot of casual gamers. Congratulations to Henry Stern and AH. As usual, Games cited a bunch of games from small publishers. I want to extend huge congratulations to Paul and Jennifer Sturgis for Parlay’s win in the word game category--what a wonderful boost for a husband and wife company! Congrats as well to Dominic Crapuchettes for the best party game award for Wits & Wagers. And look: we finally found a best wargame award that DIDN’T go to Twilight Struggle! Eric - Thanks for the clarification. I just removed the reference to the year - saying it’s an award for 2007 just seems too goofy. - Rick Posted by Rick Thornquist on Oct 12, 2006 at 08:18 AM | #

Rick wrote: “Saying it’s an award for 2007 just seems too goofy.” I guess they’re thinking that this is the game they’re going to honor and celebrate over the next 12 months. Or maybe I say, that their readers are going to celebrate now that GAMES has told them about the game. Perhaps it’s similar to the Chinese calendar where we learn that we’re entering the year of the pig. Just a thought. Posted by W. Eric Martin on Oct 12, 2006 at 08:31 AM | #

Could be possible to see this decision from Games Magazine like a political option to incentive Avalon Hill for euro games? Posted by Mario Aguila on Oct 12, 2006 at 11:57 AM | #
