Games Quarterly Magazine Ceases Publication

Games Quarterly Magazine, along with its owner Matthews Simmons Marketing (MSM), is no more. As an item on GamingReport.com notes, “mounting bad accounts receivable through the past eighteen months and recent losses due to the launch of Games Expo 2007” have led to the closure of Matthew Simmons Marketing. National Games Week, which is trademarked by MSM, is likely another casualty of the closure.

Games Expo 2007 was an ambitious attempt by MSM to surplant the GAMA Trade Show as the gaming event in Las Vegas, but the show attracted far fewer retail and big store buyers than promised in pre-show promotion, which led to publishers spending more time in each other’s booths than with potential customers.

GQM publisher Mark Simmons hasn’t returned calls or emails asking about the status of Games Quarterly subscriptions, specifically whether subscribers will receive refunds for undelivered issues. GQM issue #13, originally scheduled for May 2007, was supposed to include an English version of the Carcassonne expansion Die Katharer. Rio Grande publisher Jay Tummelson says that this expansion will not appear in another publication at the request of Spielbox, the original publisher of the expansion.

I remember reading that many participants at Games Expo hoped for its demise so that they would need to attend only a single Expo.  This appears to have been an aggressive move which bore appropriate consequences.

Similarly, I have been very unimpressed any time I’ve seen Games Quarterly.

I’m sorry for anyone who may have lost money subscribing, and I hope that a better outlet for these expansions will pop up.
