Gone Cardboard: Masters of Venice, from R&R Games

Now here’s one for the “I never expected to see this” department: a European-style strategy game from R&R Games, best known for party games like Time’s Up, Smarty Party and You Must Be an Idiot! The new game, designed by R&R president Frank DiLorenzo, is called Masters of Venice, and players take the role of inexperienced merchants in 15th century Italy who are trying to create a place for themselves in the city market. Here’s a game description from the publisher:

To play Masters of Venice, players try to trade in spices, silks, gems, iron and grain to bring in great wealth. Fulfilling orders from the Guild Hall craftsmen provides even more gold and prestige. However, this city of Venice is fickle in demand and politics, and help from powerful people such as the Guildmaster, the Harbormaster, or even the Gondoliers can be crucial for success. In the end, the most important thing to remember is simple… buy low and sell high! For only those who amass the most gold and prestige can truly be the masters of Venice!

Masters of Venice is for 2-5 players, ages 10 and up, with a playing time of 30 minutes per player and a retail price of $35. The game should be available before the end of April 2009. This game has been added to Gone Cardboard.
