Gone Cardboard News: Court of the Medici, Coming from Z-Man
Z-Man Games, together with Evertide Games, has announced a new card game for release before the end of 2008: Court of the Medici, designed by Richard James, whose only previous release is Straw.
Court of the Medici is a two-player card game that plays in about 25 minutes. Each player has an identical deck of nobles that they can use to add influence to the court, build alliances, or conspire against other nobles already in play. The game ends once the Grand Duke’s Inner Circle – which starts the game holding four nobles from each player – is empty or someone can’t play a card. The player with the most influential set of nobles on the board wins.

“Thematically, the game has gone through a number of changes, only to come full circle back to Renaissance Italy,” says James. “Since it is a popular theme, we were thinking about doing something different. We considered Imperial Roman, the Roman Senate, the Tudor court, a nifty old deck of cards called Hofampterspiel and a couple other things – but in the end, the spirit of the game was Machiavellian, so nothing else would do.”
This game has been added to Gone Cardboard, and I’ll publish a detailed preview closer to the game’s release.
