Gone Cardboard News: Epic BattleLore, Specialists, and a Call to Arms
Days of Wonder has announced details about three BattleLore expansions, starting with a March 2007 preview of Epic BattleLore.
Epic BattleLore refers to large-scale battles played on two gameboards placed side-by-side. This set-up is similar to the Memoir ‘44 Overlord scenarios, except that the boards are adjacent along the long sides. Epic BattleLore comes with five Epic adventures that can be played with up to three players per side, although two player games work as well. Days of Wonder also promises “a unique new twist that involves a rather ingenious new use for a couple of your cardholders.”
Initially, this expansion will be released free online in March to everyone who has registered the game on the DoW website. All that’s needed to play is a second gameboard and additional Lore tokens as the adventures have been designed to be playable with a single army set.
In May, a paper-based version of Epic BattleLore will be available in stores, consisting of a gameboard, extra Lore tokens, and more Epic adventures.
In between the online and real world versions of Epic BattleLore comes BattleLore: Call to Arms, an army depolyment system for BattleLore. Days of Wonder notes the following:
- This expansion does NOT rely on the point-based army buying approach common to many miniature games.
- Rather, it uses a novel, card-driven deployment mechanism, centered around the use of Deployment decks, Specialist cards and Feudal Levy tokens.
- The deployment mechanics introduced in this expansion closely mimic medieval deployments of yore, and will provide you with a uniquely fun and enjoyable way to customize your troops and deploy your armies.
BattleLore: Call to Arms is due out in April and will retail for around $20.

Finally (for now), May brings the release of BattleLore Specialist packs, which will feature new units on a common theme. Days of Wonder notes that “[l]ikely early candidates include a Goblin Skirmisher set, a Dwarven Battalion (complete with the already infamous Dwarven Bagpipers!), and a 100 Years War Battalion.” Each Specialist pack will retail for about $20. Individual units will be sold through the DoW website for those who want just a few figures or lots of a particular one.
These games have been added to Gone Cardboard.

Hmmm… five (some potential) expansions, four of which will be priced around $20 each. Days of Wonder seems to be missing their projected price point of $7-$12 for expansions. By a LOT! Posted by Kevin Wood on Feb 18, 2007 at 07:00 PM | #
